Softball Punches Ticket to SLC Playoffs With Sweep

Huskies defeat Islanders, 4-1 and 8-0 in six innings

HOUSTON – HBU pitching held Texas A&M-Corpus Christi to one unearned run in two games, as the Huskies earned a trip to the Southland Conference Tournament with 4-1 and 8-0 wins over the Islanders Saturday afternoon.

With the two wins, coupled by Nicholls upsetting Central Arkansas and earning a split with the Bears, HBU has clinched a spot in the conference tournament, set for May 8-10 in Hammond, La.

Melissa Herman went 2-for-3 for HBU in game one, while Victoria Granchelli went 1-for-2 with a pair of RBI. Emily Mueller (8-10) earned the win in the circle, as she allowed six hits, one unearned run, and one walk with two strikeouts.

Hayley Galloway and Cassie Carroll each had a pair of hits for the Islanders, while Galloway had the lone RBI. Liz Carter (12-18) took the loss in the circle, as she gave up nine hits, four runs, and one walk with four strikeouts.

The Islanders had an opportunity to score the game's first run, as Carroll led off the top of the third with a double, then advanced to third on a wild pitch. But the Huskies got a pair of groundouts and Mueller struck out Galloway to end the threat.

HBU took a 1-0 lead in the bottom half of the inning, as Lauren Schwirtlich hit a one-out triple, then crossed home on an RBI double by Shay Orsak. The Huskies increased their lead to 2-0 on as Cecilia Bauer's RBI double scored V. Granchelli in the bottom of the fourth.

The Islanders cut the deficit in half in the top of the fifth on Galloway's RBI single, but the Huskies answered in the bottom of the inning, as V. Granchelli hit a two-run single that scored Kirsten Schwirtlich and Orsak for a 4-1 lead.

L. Schwirtlich, Orsak, and Daniella Rodarte each had two hits, as Rodarte reached base all three times in going 2-for-2 with a walk, and Orsak had a game-high three RBI. Shannon O'Connor (8-6) was brilliant in the circle, as she allowed just two hits with zero walks, while setting a new career high with seven strikeouts.

Valerie Perez and Mackinzee Griebel each had a hit for the Islanders. Constance Brandenburg (1-15) took the loss, as she gave up 10 hits, eight runs (three earned), and three walks, with one strikeout.

There was no scoring until the Huskies put a four-spot in the bottom of the fourth, all coming with two outs. Orsak hit an RBI single, followed by a two-run single by K. Schwirtlich. The scoring ended on Alyssa Burnett's RBI double.

Griebel's one-out single in the top of the fifth was the first hit allowed by O'Connor since the top of the first.

The Huskies ended the game with another four-run inning, this time in the bottom of the sixth. Orsak's two-run double made the score 6-0. She later scored on an Islander error. The game ended as Herman's sacrifice fly brought home K. Schwirtlich.

HBU (21-25 overall, 14-12 SLC) and TAMUCC (15-36 overall, 10-15 SLC) conclude the series – and the regular season – tomorrow at 2 pm. After the game, seniors Rodarte, L. Schwirtlich, Kendall Stiefel, and Holly Webb will be honored.
