ABILENE, Texas – HBU shot a season-high 65 percent from the floor, but it was the season-high 30 turnovers that plagued the Huskies, as the women's basketball team lost to Abilene Christian, 82-70, Thursday evening from Moody Coliseum.
Shanice Steenholdt led HBU (9-13 overall, 5-6 SLC) with 22 points on 10-of-11 shooting from the floor.
Rachel Arthur and
Tayler Jefferson each scored 13 points and combined for 13 assists (Jefferson 7, Arthur 6).
Monet Neal was tied for the game high of seven rebounds.
Alexis Mason scored a game-high 23 points for ACU (13-10 overall, 4-4 SLC), as she was 7-for-12 from the floor and 4-for-7 from beyond the arc. Renata Marquez scored 19, Suzzy Dimba added 15, and Lizzy Dimba rounded out the foursome with 13 points. S. Dimba pulled down seven rebounds for the Wildcats.
HBU jumped out to a 17-6 lead in the first 4 ½ minutes, as the Huskies were contributed to three and-one plays by Neal, Arthur, and Jefferson, as HBU shot 78 percent from the floor in their run.
ACU had to take their second timeout of the first 10 minutes of the opening half, as a great defensive play by
Wiebke Bruns led to a fast-break layup by Steenholdt as the Huskies led the Wildcats, 30-19, at the midway point of the first half.
A three-pointer by Mason was part of an 11-1 run that cut the Huskies' lead to one, 31-30, and force them to take a timeout with 4:01 remaining in the first half. Back-to-back jumpers by
Erin McGarrachan and
Heidi Sihvola followed by a forced turnover by Jefferson gave the Huskies the momentum again with the score 35-30. Another Mason trey answered for the Wildcats as the Huskies led by two, 35-33, with under two minutes to go. The Huskies weathered the storm and led ACU at halftime, 39-34.
Steenholdt led HBU with 10 first-half points, while Arthur had nine. Steenholdt grabbed a half-high four rebounds. Mason and Renata Marquez led ACU with 10 points apiece.
ACU started the second half on a 13-6 run and took its first lead of the game on a three-pointer by Mason at the 16:39-mark, as the Wildcats led HBU, 47-45. The Wildcats continued their 19-3 run to lead the Huskies by 10, 66-56, with 7:50 remaining in the game. The closest the Huskies came the remaining time was eight.
HBU concludes the road trip at Incarnate Word Saturday at 2 pm.
