Miguel Zapata fired a shot past John Wendt in the 87
th minute to give his fellow seniors and the rest of the Huskies a 2-1 victory over Air Force Sunday in the regular season finale at Sorrels Field.
Stefan Lamanna took a team-high four shots for HBU (3-11-2 overall, 2-8-0 WAC), as he scored the first goal of the match. He and
Thilo Borgmann each had two shots on goal.
Philip Poser made a career-high 13 saves in the win. The 13 saves are the most since the resurrection of the program in 2006.
Zachary Modly took a match-high five shots for Air Force (7-7-4 overall, 3-6-1 WAC), while all four of Blake Elder's shots hit the target.
Jake Schenk started the match and made three saves while allowing one goal in 45 minutes. There was one team save. Wendt took the loss in goal, as he made one save and allowed the game winner in the second half.
Air Force almost took a 1-0 lead in the 15
th minute, as Scott McGillivray's shot rang off the cross bar.
In the 43
rd minute, the Huskies were awarded a corner kick.
Gustavo Alvarado sent the ball into the box. Lamanna took a shot, but was saved by A.J. Esparza for a team save, keeping the match scoreless.
HBU would not be denied shortly after, as Lamanna beat Schenk with 53 seconds remaining in the first half, assisted by
Marc- Anthone.
Air Force outshot HBU, 10-8, in the first half and had a 5-2 advantage in corner kicks.
The Falcons tied the match 1-1 in the 65
th minute, as HBU fouled Air Force in the box. Modly took the penalty kick and scored.
Tempers were flaring with a tied match and Alvarado received an immediate red card in the 70
th minute, forcing HBU to play a man down the final 30 minutes of regulation.
After clearing away a couple of Air Force corner kicks, HBU scored the eventual game winner at the 86:28-mark, when Zapata scored his second goal of the season, assisted by
Patrick Toh. Toh fed Zapata with an up-field pass, who beat Wendt far-side.
Poser made two fantastic diving stops in the waning seconds to give the Huskies the win.
Air Force outshot HBU, 13-7, in the second half and 23-15 for the match. The Falcons had all six second-half corner kicks and had an 11-2 advantage.
