Women’s Soccer Battles Bearkats to Scoreless Tie

Senior goalkeeper Patty Walrath sets new career high with 11 saves

HUNTSVILLE, Texas – Senior goalkeeper Patty Walrath set a new career high with 11 saves as HBU battled Sam Houston State to a 0-0 double overtime tie on a cold, breezy night at Pritchett Field.

"We started the game slow and it took us a half to find a good rhythm," said HBU head coach Misty Jones. "We really took off in the second half and, over time, created some very dangerous chances. I was proud that the girls made the adjustments that we asked of them at halftime. If we play with that intensity, we will finish the season very well."

Natalie Hager HBU (7-6-4 overall, 6-1-3 SLC) with seven shots, as she and Allison Abendschein each had two shots on goal for the Huskies, who ran their unbeaten streak to six matches (5-0-1).

Walrath improved her record to 7-5-3. Her 10th career shutout places her tied for second in the career record books, one shy of Shelby Horn's record of 11.

Ashley Alonzo had seven shots, three on target, to lead SHSU (8-8-1 overall, 7-2-1 SLC). The Bearkats' unbeaten streak is at five matches (4-0-1).

In the 16th minute, after the Huskies cleared a Bearkat corner kick, Ellee Hall ran the length of the field and fired a shot that clanged off the cross bar. Connor Ryder followed, but her shot went high.

Three minutes later, Allie Johnson's shot was blocked on a sliding attempt by a Huskies' defender. The ball was sitting dangerously in the box. Alonzo reached the ball first and fired a shot high.

Neither team could get the upper hand as halftime was 0-0. SHSU outshot HBU, 9-3. Walrath made two saves. The Bearkats doubled up the Huskies in corner kicks, 4-2.
The duo of Hager and Rekebah Tovar nearly connected twice early in the second half, but the match remained scoreless.

In the 87th minute, Walrath made a spectacular one-handed save, leaping straight up to stop Madison Bible's shot. The Huskies cleared the ensuing corner to keep the match deadlocked at 0-0.

Walrath made a terrific diving save on Johnson right before the end of regulation.

SHSU outshot HBU, 13-8, in the second half, and 22-11 in regulation. Walrath made 10 saves, tying her career high she set one week ago at Nicholls. SHSU has a 10-3 advantage in corner kicks.

Hambeton stopped a shot deep in the box by Hager off a Huskies' corner kick midway through the first overtime.

HBU outshot the Bearkats, 6-3, in the two overtime periods, as SHSU outshot the Huskies, 25-17, for the match.

With the tie, the standings remain the same, with SHSU in second place and HBU in third. For the Huskies to earn the first-round bye in the conference tournament, HBU needs to defeat Southeastern Louisiana Sunday and SHSU must lose to Nicholls. HBU will finish the regular season no lower than third place.

HBU hosts Southeastern Louisiana Sunday at 1 pm on "Senior Day." Immediately following the match, the Huskies' eight seniors will be honored.
