HUNTSVILLE, Texas – HBU senior outside hitter
Bailey Keith led the Huskies with 12 kills in their 3-1 (25-22, 25-22, 15-25, 25-23) fall to Sam Houston in Southland Conference volleyball Thursday evening.
Sophomore outside hitter
Jessica Wooten recorded another double-double for HBU (12-13, 6-4 SLC) with 11 kills and 14 digs. Senior outside hitter
Megan McStravick also had 11 kills for the Huskies, while junior middle blocker
Allison Doerpinghaus had 10 kills. Sophomore setter
Kayla Armer recorded 44 assists for HBU and added 10 digs. Senior libero
Haley Hoffman recorded a match-high of 24 digs for the Huskies.
Devene Wells-Gibson recorded a match-high of 22 kills for the Bearkats, while adding 10 digs. Michelle Griffith had a match-high of 49 assists for Sam Houston State, along with 13 digs. Claire Kilpatrick had 17 digs for the Bearkats, while Breanna Homer had 12 digs.
In the first set, Sam Houston State took the lead for most of the set, but HBU managed to battle back to tie the set 17-17. The Bearkats then scored the next three points to take the lead again 20-17. Once the Huskies scored the next point, Sam Houston State scored to keep their lead and win the set 25-22.
In the second set, HBU took the first three points, which included a kill by freshman middle blocker
Blair Gillard, but Sam Houston State came back to tie the set 3-3. The Huskies then tied the set again 11-11, but could not keep the lead, which resulted in the Bearkats taking the set 25-22.
In the third set, the Huskies and the Bearkats were tied up 11-11. HBU then scored the next five points, including kills by Keith and McStravick, to take the lead 16-11. The Huskies then kept their led for the rest of the set in order to win 25-15.
In the fourth set, the Bearkats took an early lead by four points. Although the Huskies came back and only trailed by three, they were not able to take a lead, which resulted in Sam Houston State winning the set 27-21.
HBU outblocked Sam Houston State 10-8. The Bearkats outhit the Huskies 56-49. HBU trailed by three in digs to Sam Houston State.
The Huskies will return to action to face Lamar University Saturday, Nov. 1 starting at 1 p.m. in Sharp Gym.
