HOUSTON – HBU freshman middle blocker
Blair Gillard recorded a total of nine blocks for the Huskies in their 3-1 (27-25, 23-25, 25-17, 25-23) victory over Nicholls in Southland Conference volleyball Saturday afternoon in Sharp Gym.
Sophomore outside hitter
Jessica Wooten recorded a double-double for HBU (11-12, 6-3 SLC) with 21 kills and 18 digs, while also contributing five blocks. Senior outside hitter
Bailey Keith recorded 12 kills for the Huskies and five blocks. Sophomore setter
Kayla Armer had a match-high of 49 assists for HBU and added 13 digs to complete her double-double. Senior libero
Haley Hoffman recorded 17 digs for HBU. Senior outside hitter
Bailey Keith and sophomore defensive specialist Beth Schecterle recorded 13 digs each for the Huskies. Junior middle blocker
Allison Doerpinghaus also contributed for HBU with nine kills and seven blocks.
Kali Schwartz recorded a double-double for the Colonels with 14 kills and 12 digs. Kaci Eaton also had a double-double with 21 kills and 12 digs for Nicholls. Ainsley Marroccoli recorded a total of 45 assists for the Colonels. Kalynn Egea had a match-high with 31 digs for Nicholls.
In the first set, the Colonels took the lead for the majority until the Huskies came back to tie it up 16-16. Nicholls then took the lead again to make the set 20-24. An attack error by the Colonels gave the Huskies a point to make the set 21-24, followed by a block by Doerpinghaus and Armer to make it a two-point set. A kill by McStravick gave HBU their next point, followed by a kill by Wooten in order to tie the set 24-24. The Huskies then gave the Colonels a point off an error, but answered back with a kill by McStravick to tie it again at 25-25. HBU then took the final two points of the set by a service ace from McStravick and a kill by Wooten to end the set 27-25.
In the second set, the Colonels took the first two points, but the Huskies answered back to tie 2-2. Once tying again 3-3, HBU then took the lead by two from an attack error and a block by Doerpinghaus and Keith. The Huskies kept their lead for the majority of the set until the Colonels made a comeback to tie it up 17-17. Nicholls then took their lead for the first time by scoring four straight points to make the set 17-21. A kill by Armer allowed HBU to make a point, but the Colonels didn't allow the Huskies to take back a lead as they finished the set 25-23.
In the third set, kills by Schwartz and Miller allowed the Colonels to take the lead 0-2. However, kills by Keith and McStravick tied up the set 2-2. The set did not tie up again until 12-12, where two attack errors by Nicholls allowed HBU to take the lead 14-12. After a service error by Armer, the Huskies then fired five straight points to keep their lead 19-13. The Colonels were not able to come back for a lead, allowing the Huskies to win the set 25-17.
In the fourth set, Nicholls came back to tie it up at 16-16. HBU then took the lead 17-16 from an attack error. Although the Huskies took a lead, the Colonels fought back to tie it up again 22-22. HBU scored two points with kills by Wooten and sophomore outside hitter
Melissa Fuchs to make the set 24-22. A kill by Schwartz gave Nicholls the following point, but HBU answered back with a kill by Keith in order to win the set 25-23.
HBU outblocked Nicholls 16-4. The Huskies also outhit the Colonels 62-50. HBU outdug Nicholls 85-74.
The Huskies will return to action away on Tuesday, Oct. 28 to face Texas Southern at 7 p.m.
