B.J. Kelly carried 16 times for 123 yards, posting the Huskies' first-ever 100-plus yard single-game rushing total, but Stephen F. Austin's 24-point first-quarter burst helped the Lumberjacks go on to a 59-27 victory in Southland Conference football Saturday night at Husky Stadium.
Sophomore quarterback
Jonathan Fleming returned to the field after missing the last three games with a knee injury and went 14-for-31 for 214 yards with a pair of touchdowns and a pair of interceptions for the Huskies (1-6, 0-4 SLC). Redshirt freshman
Craig Bell rushed for 66 yards and a scored twice on 11 carries. Redshirt freshman
Ethan Fry caught three passes for 79 yards, and senior tight end
Kenneth Bibbins also caught three for 75 yards and a touchdown. Freshman
D'Angelo Wallace caught the other of Fleming's TD tosses, winding up with three receptions for 18 yards.
Redshirt freshman linebacker
Garrett Dolan led HBU with nine tackles, while sophomore cornerback
Eric Amoako added seven. Freshman
Jonathan Buffin recorded his second interception of the season, and
Kafo Tuha,
Josh Jones and
Austin Holley each posted sacks.
The Huskies outrushed the Lumberjacks, 233-200, despite the nation's sixth-leading rusher, SFA's Gus Johnson going for 133 yards on 17 carries and scoring three touchdowns. Fred Ford added 50 yards on the ground. Zach Conque completed 11-of-17 passes for 135 yards and three touchdowns. Tyler Boyd led SFA with four catches for 44 yards.
Collin Garrett led the Lumberjacks with 12 tackles, while Ahmad Muhammad had six. Alex Miller made both of SFA's interceptions.
After SFA's Braxton Bearden returned the opening kickoff 98 yards down to the 2-yard line and Johnson punched it in for the first score, HBU took over and Fleming completed a 13-yard pass to Fry. The play was under review when all of the power went out in the stadium. The game was delayed one hour, 52 minutes and resumed close to 9 p.m., marking what is probably the longest review in NCAA history. When play resumed, the reception was upheld, but the drive stalled out and the Huskies punted.
The Lumberjacks took a 14-0 lead when Conque completed a 36-yard touchdown to Aaron Thomas.
On the ensuing drive, Kelly ripped off a 33-yard run, then Bell gashed the Lumberjacks for a 34-yard touchdown, but the extra point hit the left upright. Kelly's run tied and Bell's run was one yard more than the Huskies' only other running play over 15 yards this season.
SFA answered right back on an eight-yard keeper by Conque for a touchdown to make the score 21-6. After Miller's first interception, the Lumberjacks settled for a 33-yard field goal by Jordan Wiggs to lead 24-6 after the first quarter. SFA extended the lead to 31-6 after Joe Minden hit DJ ward for a 43-yard completion, then Johnson scored from 15 yards out.
The Huskies then went on a 16-play, 79-yard drive that took 7:15 off the clock and was capped by a one-yard touchdown plunge by Bell. The key plays of the drive were a 34-yard catch by Fry and a six-yard catch by Wallace on fourth down at the SFA 18.
HBU took the opening kickoff and
Maxwell Brown made a 28-yard catch to the SFA 48. On the next play, Kelly busted the Huskies' longest running play of the season, a 43-yard carry down to the nine. Fleming then hooked up with Wallace on a seven-yard touchdown strike as HBU got back into the game and made the score 31-20.
SFA regained control when it stopped HBU on a fourth-and-one at midfield, then took over and scored a touchdown on a 17-yard run by Johnson. Conque's seven-yard pass to Justce Liggins put the Lumberjacks ahead, 45-20, early in the fourth quarter.
Fleming hit Bibbins for a 58-yard touchdowns on the Huskies' next possession to cut the deficit to 45-27.
Conque's completed a five-yard touchdown pass to Thomas with 10:40 left, then Cam Washington punched one in from five yards out with 6:30 to go for the game's final score.
The Huskies did put together an impressive final drive when sophomore
Jackie Robinson broke free for a 21-yard gain, then Fleming hit Fry on a 32-yard completion down to the four, but the Huskies turned it over on downs as they failed to score in the final seconds.
HBU returns to action when it hosts Nicholls for Homecoming Saturday, Oct. 25 at 7 p.m. at Husky Stadium. The game will be shown live on ESPN3 as the Southland Conference Game of the Week.
