ABILENE, Texas – HBU outshot Abilene Christian, 22-21, and, 7-5, in shots on goal, but could not get a ball past the ACU goalkeeper, as the Huskies lost their Southland Conference opener, 1-0, Sunday afternoon at Wildcat Soccer Pitch.
The only scoring came in the ninth minute, when Natalie Throneberry scored, assisted by Alyssa Gerner. With
Stephanie Castellon out of position, Throneberry floated the ball over the Huskies' netminder and into the back of the net.
The closest the Huskies came to tying the match was in the 68th minute, when
Amina Radoncic's shot was blocked, then ACU goalkeeper Sydney Newton saved
Kelsey Missimer's shot seconds later.
Allison Abendschein led HBU with five shot attempts, while she and
Molly Missimer had two shots on goal.
Castellon dropped to 1-4-1 overall and 0-1-0 in the conference, as she made four saves.
HBU was able to keep the Wildcats' top two scorers – Andrea Carpenter and Jacey Ferrara – off the scoreboard. Both players had five shot attempts and Carpenter had two shots on goal.
Newton improved to 4-0-1 overall and 2-0-0 in the conference, as she made seven saves.
HBU (1-6-1, 0-1-0 SLC) will return home to face SLC foe Northwestern State on Friday, Sept. 27 at 7 pm. The Huskies will then face Lamar on Sunday, Sept. 29 at 1 pm in Beaumont.
