HOUSTON – The Houston Baptist University football team will play six games during its inaugural season, four of which will be home games – three at Strake Jesuit College Preparatory and one at BBVA Compass Stadium – head coach
Vic Shealy announced Tuesday.
“We're excited about playing in 2013 as I believe this will significantly help our program gain experience and maturity as we head into the Southland Conference,” Shealy said. “The quality of the opponents will be very competitive for us starting out, and we will have to play well in order to be successful.”
“These six games are a chance for our student-athletes to develop, and I believe that when we begin Southland Conference play in 2014, we will look back and these experiences will be invaluable to us.”
HBU will open the season on the road as they face Wayland Baptist Saturday, Sept. 14, at 6 p.m. in Plainview, Texas.
The Huskies will be home for three-straight games, beginning with the home opener Saturday, Sept. 21 against Texas College at Strake Jesuit. HBU will then host Oklahoma Baptist on Saturday, Sept. 28 also at Strake Jesuit.
HBU will take a week off before welcoming future Southland Conference rival Abilene Christian on Saturday, Oct. 12 in a matchup at BBVA Compass Stadium, home of the Houston Dynamo.
The Huskies will take its second week off before traveling to take on Incarnate Word, another future Southland Conference foe, on Saturday, Oct. 26 in San Antonio.
HBU's season finale against Texas A&M-Commerce on Saturday, Nov. 9 will highlight the weekend's Homecoming festivities.
“This is another first for HBU,” said HBU President Robert Sloan. “Establishing our schedule for this developmental season is a significant step forward in beginning our much anticipated Division I football program.”
“This marks out in a concrete way the beginning of competitiveness, and what we believe will be a way to more visibly rally our student body and alumni around HBU, to add the energy of football to the HBU experience, and of course to have a program that has the kind of integrity that matches the mission and purpose of Houston Baptist University. We are all grateful to
Vic Shealy and the football coaching staff, as well as Athletic Director
Steve Moniaci.”
The 2013 season will be a “developmental” season for the Huskies, meaning HBU student-athletes will be able to play without using a year of NCAA eligibility; however, it will count against their NCAA five-year clock. The Huskies are currently in their second week of spring practice, which are usually held weekdays at 7 a.m. at Sorrels Field, home of the HBU soccer teams. The football team also has two practices remaining at the Houston Texans' Methodist Training Center, March 28 and April 12, at 4 p.m. All practices are open to the public and the media.
“Our coaching staff as well as our athletic staff is anxious for the beginning of football season in 2013,” Moniaci said. “There is still significant planning and progress as we develop our football program and facilities, but at least now we have an opportunity to reach out to our fans, alumni and student body, and begin to plan our Saturdays in the fall.”
