HOUSTON –
Shanice Steenholdt recorded her first double-double of the season, with 26 points and 11 rebounds, but it wasn't enough, as visiting HBU dropped an 82-70 decision to Texas Southern Thursday evening at H&PE Building.
Steenholdt led HBU (1-1) with 26 points, as she shot 10-of-18 from the floor, 1-of-3 from beyond the arc, and 5-of-8 from the charity stripe. Along with the 11 boards, Steenholdt had six steals, which was one shy of her career high.
Rachel Arthur continued her torrid start to the season, as she scored 13 points.
Jazzmin Parker led Texas Southern (2-1) in scoring for the third-straight game, as she dropped 30 points on 10-of-22 shooting. She hit 4-of-8 threes and was a perfect 6-for-6 from the foul line. Brianna Sidney scored 20 points, while Morgan Simmons earned a double-double of 13 points and 15 boards.
HBU started off hot, as the Huskies scored five of the first seven points. The Huskies were aggressive early, as Steenholdt recorded a block and
Erin McGarrachan had a steal which resulted in being fouled.
With HBU leading 7-2 with 18:12 remaining in the opening half, TSU used a 9-0 run to turn a five-point deficit into a four-point lead, 11-7. It was then the Huskies' turn to use a run, as they scored 11 unanswered to lead by eight, 18-11, with 12:29 remaining in the first half. Steenholdt had two steals and a three pointer in that run.
The Lady Tigers battled, cutting down HBU's lead and eventually having a two-point lead, 31-29, with 2:32 left, following a three-pointer by Parker. That trey sparked TSU, who continued on its run and led the Huskies by six at the break, 37-33.
Steenholdt scored 18 of her 26 points in the first half, as she matched TSU's Parker for the half high in points. Steenholdt also led the Huskies with five rebounds, while Simmons had a half-high 11 boards.
HBU opened the second half on a 6-2 run to tie the game at 39-all with 17:00 remaining in the game.
The teams battled to the fifth tie of the contest, at 46-46 with 12:27 to go in the game, before TSU used an 11-4 run for its largest lead of the game, 57-50, with 9:17 remaining. The Huskies came as close as three, 59-56, following a jumper by McGarrachan with 8:06 remaining, but that was all the closer HBU came the rest of the way.
