HOUSTON – Sam Houston State scored the only goal with 13 minutes left in regulation, as the HBU women's soccer team lost their home regular season finale to the Bearkats, 1-0, Friday afternoon at Sorrels Field.

The teams were evenly matched, as the Huskies outshot the Bearkats, 5-4, 2-0 in shots on goal, and had the lone corner kick in the first half.

The Bearkats narrowly took the lead, as Ashley Alonzo's shot in the 62nd minute hit the post. HBU netminder Patty Walrath followed that by making three-straight saves less than two minutes apart to keep the match scoreless.

The Huskies' best chance came in the 67th minute, as they were fouled in the box. Molly Missimer took the PK, but SHSU goalkeeper Kylie Hambleton made the save, as the score remained deadlocked at 0-0.

A team finally broke through offensively in the 87th minute. Following a yellow card on HBU, Shelby McDaniel took the ensuing free kick and scored past Walrath to give the visiting Bearkats a 1-0 lead.

The Huskies put immediate pressure on and almost tied the match, as a cross to Missimer almost connected. A header by Missimer and a shot by Allison Abendschein were both saved by Hambleton. The Huskies had one last chance, as they were awarded a corner kick in the waning seconds, but the resulting shot attempt was blocked.

SHSU outshot HBU, 17-16, while HBU had a 5-2 advantage in corner kicks. Walrath took the loss in goal as she made four saves. Hambleton made nine saves in the winning effort for the Bearkats.

HBU (5-12-1, 4-7-0 SLC) concludes the regular season at Southeastern Louisiana Sunday at 1 pm.
