COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Air Force outscored HBU 2-0 in the second half and overcame a 2-1 halftime deficit to defeat HBU, 3-2, Sunday afternoon at Cadet Soccer Stadium. The loss snapped the Huskies' six-match winning streak.
HBU scored the match's first goal, as
Tobenna Uzo scored his team-leading eighth goal of the season. His eight goals and 16 points are tied for the most in the WAC. He headed in a free kick that came from
Thilo Borgmann ten minutes into the match.
Just 55 seconds later, Air Force's Zachary Modly was fouled in the box and was awarded a penalty kick. He converted, tying the match at 1-1.
With 13 seconds remaining in the opening half,
Patrick Toh's shot was blocked by the Falcon defense, resulting in an HBU corner kick. Toh took the corner and
Walter Kromholz headed the ball into the back of the net with just six seconds to go in the half, giving the Huskies a 2-1 lead.
That shot gave the Huskies an 11-10 advantage in shots, while HBU had a 4-0 advantage in corner kicks. Both goalkeepers – HBU's
George Kelley and Air Force's Jake Schenk – made two saves in the first half.
Air Force tied the match just ten minutes into the second half, as Caleb Downey headed in a free kick from Blake Elder.
Air Force took its first lead of the match in the 75th minute, as Modly scored his second goal of the game, assisted by Tucker Axhoj. Axhoj sent a centering pass and Modly scored from five yards out.
The Huskies came within inches of tying the game at three, as Kromholz's shot at the 80th minute hit the post. HBU continued to keep the pressure on, but
Gustavo Alvarado's shot was blocked, another shot of his went wide, and Kromholz's shot was saved in the final minutes as Air Force held on.
HBU outshot Air Force, 6-5, in the second half and 17-15 in the match. Kelley dropped to 5-3-0 on the season, as he made two saves. Joey Speschock played the second half in goal for Air Force and improved his record to 1-2, making three saves.
HBU (7-3-0 overall, 2-1-0 WAC) returns home to face Grand Canyon Friday, Oct. 18 at 7 pm and Air Force on Sunday, Oct. 20 at 12 pm.
