Houston Christian University continues its three-match road stretch with a trip to the Golden State, as the Huskies take on California State Northridge on Friday evening. Kick-off from Matador Soccer Field is scheduled for 9 pm CT.
The Huskies are 1-3-0 to start the season after falling to then No. 5 ranked SMU on Monday night in Dallas. The Ponies have moved up to No. 3 in the national rankings and contribute to HCU's 12th ranked strength of schedule thus far in 2026. The Huskies also rank 74th in the RPI, the highest of any Ohio Valley Conference member.
Through four matches, the Huskies have yet to find their stride on offense with
Ryan Okerayi having the team's lone score, a 75th minute game-winner from the spot in a 1-0 win over UMass Lowell. HCU is averaging just over nine shots per match with 4.3 of those coming on target.
The defense has battled through the tough early schedule, having allowed just three goals through the first three games before the result at SMU.
Harvey Heeps has been solid in his debut season in the pipes, making 18 saves over four matches, including a career-high nine against the Mustangs Monday night.
The Huskies are coming off a second straight runner-up finish in the Ohio Valley Conference. HCU went 11-5-3 overall and advanced to the OVC title match where it fell at Lindenwood to the Lions in a penalty kick shootout. It was the most victories in a single season since the 1990 team won 14 and are now 10-5-5 in league play over the past two seasons.
Ryan Pratt enters his 10th season as the head coach of the Huskies, his 13th overall with the program. The Huskies were tabbed to finish second in the Ohio Valley Conference preseason poll.
The Huskies will be matching up with the Matadors for the first time. Friday will mark the 48th game all-time versus a California opponent, a number bolstered by HCU's 10-year affiliate membership in the WAC. The Huskies joined the Ohio Valley Conference for its inaugural season of soccer in 2023, also as an affiliate. HCU last ventured into California last year when it defeated UC San Diego 2-0 exactly one year to the day.
CSUN is 2-1 on the young season and have won two in a row since a season-opening defeat to UNLV. The Matadors defeated Oral Roberts 1-0 on Sunday night in their most recent outing.
The Matadors are led by Terry Davila, now in his 28th season at the helm in Northridge. The Matadors returned their two top goal scorers from last year in Enrique Pineda and Jorge Solorzano as well as their starting netminder, Dorian Drucks.
Pineda, a senior forward, had three goals last season but has yet to open his account in 2026. Solorzano is a senior midfielder who had two goals last year, and while he has also not scored this year, he does have two assists. Kayvon Monfared, a senior transfer forward from Saint Mary's, has three goals to pace the Matador offensive attack.
Drucks, a senior keeper from Germany, was 6-6-5 last year, and is 2-1 on the season with four saves against 14 total shots faced.
The road stretch concludes on Monday evening when the Huskies face former WAC foe Grand Canyon University in Phoenix.
