NATCHITOCHES, La. – Down 1-0 at halftime, Houston Baptist scored three second-half goals to defeat host Northwestern State, 3-1, Friday evening from the Lady Demon Soccer Complex.
“It's always good to get a win on the road,” said head coach
Misty Jones. “We went down 1-0 on a free kick at the top of the box in the first half, but we came out firing in the second half with two quick goals.”
Northwestern State scored the match's first goal, as Ashlee Savona scored unassisted in the 24th minute. The Lady Demons had a corner kick five minutes prior.
HBU outshot Northwestern State in the half, 10-8, and 5-4 in shots on goal.
The Huskies wasted little time tying the match, as
Rebekah Tovar scored her first collegiate goal, assisted by
Lindsay Matlock, just four minutes into the second half. The Huskies had a corner kick two minutes prior, which resulted in three shot attempts: one save, one block, and one goal.
Natalie Hager gave the Huskies a 2-1 lead in the 57th minute, assisted by
Molly Missimer.
Hager's second goal of the night gave the Huskies some breathing room and a 3-1 lead, as her tally came in the 76th minute, assisted by
Brandi Hart.
“I'm very proud of the way we came out in the second half,” said Jones.
Hager's two goals and four points led HBU (3-3-1), while Tovar had two points, and Matlock, M. Missimer, and Hart each had one.
Shelby Horn earned her third win in goal, making seven saves.
Savona led Northwestern State (1-4) with two points in the match. Brooke Bourbonais suffered the loss, allowing three goals and making 10 saves.
HBU will conclude the road trip with a 1 pm start at Lamar on Sun., Sept. 9.
