Gibson Post-Match Interview (video)
HOUSTON – Houston Baptist had a five-goal first half and never looked back as the Huskies shut out visiting Texas Southern, 6-0, Friday evening at Sorrels Field.
The reigning Great West Conference Offensive Player of the Week,
Taylor Gibson, continued her hot streak by scoring the match's first two goals.
Molly Weeks and
Amina Radoncic each had three-point matches, and
Natalie Hager had two assists. The six goals were the most in one match for HBU since the Huskies blanked visiting Southern, 6-0, on Sept. 18, 2011.
Gibson scored the match's first goal of the season – and the eventual game winner – in the 17th minute, assisted by Radoncic and Hager. Radoncic sent a pass up the middle of the field and Gibson's shot hit the lower right part of the net.
The Huskies then exploded for three goals in a span of eight minutes, as Gibson scored her second goal of the match in the 24th minute (assisted by Weeks), followed by goals by Weeks in the 26th minute (assisted by
Arielle Rodriguez), and Radoncic in the 32nd minute.
HBU's fifth goal of the half came in the 39th minute, as
Rebekah Tovar scored, assisted by
Rebecca Jardon and Hager.
HBU outshot Texas Southern, 15-2, including 9-2 in shots on goal, in the half.
The Huskies played more defensively playing with a big lead in the second half.
Molly Missimer scored the only goal of the half in the 71st minute, assisted by Hager. Missimer sent a beautiful shot at the top of the box that hit the left part of the net.
Shelby Horn earned the victory in net for HBU, making two saves in 45 minutes.
Lara Johnson played the second half.
Marlyn Campa and Rebecca Hajny each had a shot on goal for Texas Southern (1-10-0). Lillana Hernandez played the first half for the Lady Tigers and suffered the loss, making four saves while allowing five goals. Hajny played the final 45 minutes and made two saves while allowing one goal.
HBU (5-5-3) will play its final non-conference match of the season this Sunday, Sept. 30 against Prairie View A&M at 1 pm.
