Men’s Soccer Shut Out at Cal

BERKELEY, Calif. – Houston Baptist ended its California trip on a rough note, losing at Cal, 5-0, Tuesday morning at Edwards Stadium.

Neither team could find the back of the net until Cal scored twice in a span of a minute and thirteen seconds late in the first half to take a 2-0 lead into the locker room.

In the 43rd minute, Cal was awarded a corner kick, which Tony Salciccia took. Twenty-five seconds later, Salciccia found the back of the net, assisted by Steve Birnbaum and Connor Hallisey at the 43:37 mark. Hallisey's pass found Salciccia deep in the box, who scored past Kevin Suarez.

Just ten seconds left in the half – at the 44:10 mark – the Bears struck again, as Luis Fuentes scored, assisted by Hallisey. Hallisey passed the ball to Fuentes, who dribbled the ball and shot it past Suarez.

The shots in the opening half were fairly even, with Cal leading 12-9, but Cal held a 5-1 advantage in shots on goal and 9-3 in corner kicks.

Cal's momentum never cooled after halftime, as the Bears scored their third goal in the 48th minute. Ryan Neil sent a cross into the box which John Fitzpatrick headed into the back of the net.

Cal's fourth goal came in the 60th minute, Cal Sespie assisted by Neil and Michael Munoz. Nine minutes later, the Bears struck again, as Kyle Marsh scored unassisted.

Zach Pierce and Christian Cruz each led HBU with three shots, as Pierce had two of the Huskies' four shots on goal. Cruz and Mateo Jimenez each had one.

Kevin Suarez started in goal and allowed five goals while making three saves in 75 minutes. Zach Harwerth played the final 15 minutes and made two saves.

Neil and Hallisey each had two-assist matches for Cal. Joining them with two points in the match were Salciccia, Casiple, Fitzpatrick, Marsh, and Fuentes, who had a goal a piece.

Kevin Peach started the match and earned the win, making three saves in 67 minutes. Robby Gogatz made one save in 23 minutes.

HBU (2-4-0) will have a break before playing in its first Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match, playing against defending MPSF tournament champions New Mexico on Sat., Sept. 29 at 7 pm.
