HOUSTON – The Houston Baptist men's soccer team scored a goal in each half en route to a 2-0 win over visiting Stetson Saturday evening from Sorrels Field.
HBU scored just 11 minutes into the match, as
Kristopher Tyrpak sent a beautiful cross pass into the box and
Zach Pierce one-touched the ball past the sprawling Stetson keeper, hitting the lower right part of the net.
The two teams entered halftime with the score 1-0 HBU. The Huskies outshot Stetson 3-0 in shots on goal, while total shots were tied at eight apiece. HBU had a chance to increase its lead in the opening half, but hit the post twice.
The Huskies got some much-needed breathing room in the second half, as
Christian Cruz scored his first collegiate goal in an individual effort in the 72nd minute. Deep in Hatter territory, Cruz put pressure on a Stetson defender and stole the ball. He then booted the ball past the sprawling keeper into a wide open net.
HBU outshot Stetson 17-15 in the match, including 6-3 in shots on goal. Stetson held a slim 5-4 advantage in corner kicks.
Zach Harwerth earned his third victory this season and his first collegiate shutout by making three saves. Andreas Schnabl took the loss for Stetson, making six saves.
HBU (2-1-0) will make its first road trip of the season, as the Huskies play three matches next weekend in California. They will take part in the Courtyard Marriot SD Central Soccer Tournament, hosted by San Diego State, on Sept. 7 and 9. The Huskies conclude the west coast trip with a meeting at Cal on Sept. 11.
