Box Score

SAN JOSE, Calif. – San Jose State scored a goal in each half and Houston Baptist's playoff hopes were diminished further, as the Huskies lost, 2-0, to SJSU Sunday afternoon at Spartan Stadium.

The Huskies entered the contest two points behind both SJSU and Denver for the final playoff spot.

Steven Sanchez scored the match's first goal in the 27th minute, assisted by Enrique Montano. After Montano sent a centering pass into the box, there was a scramble for the ball and Sanchez tapped the ball into the open net.

HBU had two golden opportunities to tie the match, as Walter Kromholz's header went high and Kristopher Tyrpak's shot went wide.

The two teams entered halftime with SJSU leading 1-0. The Spartans outshot HBU 9-4 and had a 2-0 advantage in corner kicks.

SJSU almost increased its lead 15 minutes into the second half as Diego Ochoa's shot hit the crossbar. Two minutes later, in the 62nd minute, Ochoa's shot was saved by Kevin Suarez.

The Spartans found the back of the net to increase their lead in the 67th minute, as Jonathan Salceda scored assisted by Thomas Barnes. Barnes sent an up-field pass up the left side and Salceda flicked the ball over Suarez from 11 yards out.

SJSU kept the pressure following its second goal of the match, as Suarez made another save and Garrett Foster's shot hit the post in a span of a minute, and just two minutes after the goal by Salceda.

SJSU outshot the Huskies 19-11 in the match and had five more corner kicks, 6-1.

Zach Pierce, Christian Cruz, and Walter Kromholz each had two shot attempts. Kyle Herbison had the lone shot on goal for the Huskies. Suarez took the loss in goal, making four saves and allowing two goals.

Sanchez had a match-high five shots and three shots on goal for SJSU. Emmanuel Espinoza earned the win, making one save.

HBU (4-9-2, 2-5-2 MPSF) will conclude the regular season at #10 New Mexico on Nov. 3 at 8 pm CST.
