HOUSTON – The last two unbeaten teams in the Great West Conference will duke it out on the pitch Saturday evening as Houston Baptist hosts Utah Valley at 7 pm from Sorrels Field.
HBU is 2-5-1 all-time against the Wolverines, losing to Utah Valley twice last season. UVU won the only regular season meeting in Utah, 3-1, then defeated the Huskies, 2-1 in double overtime, in the GWC championship match. Both of HBU's wins over UVU came in the 2010 campaign; the year the Huskies won their first GWC championship. The Huskies defeated the Wolverines 1-0 on Oct. 30, 2010, which snapped UVU's 14-match conference unbeaten streak. The Huskies then defeated UVU 1-0 in double overtime in the GWC semifinal match.
This season, HBU (8-5-3, 2-0-0 GWC) opened conference play with two road shutouts: a 1-0 win at South Carolina State on Oct. 11 and a 2-0 blanking at NJIT on Oct. 13. The Huskies are currently on a six-match unbeaten streak (5-0-1) and a four-game winning streak.
Natalie Hager and
Taylor Gibson have identical seven-goal, three-assist, 17-point campaigns to tie for the team lead in goals and points. Four of Hager's seven goals have been game winners.
Arielle Rodriguez's five assists are tops on the team.
Five-time GWC Defender of the Week,
Shelby Horn, has an 8-4-3 record, a 1.04 goals-against average, and a .826 save percentage. She has made 71 saves while allowing just 15 goals in 15 matches. Her eight wins and five complete-game shutouts are tied for program records in a single season.
Utah Valley (5-10-1, 3-0-0 GWC) has just five wins on the season, but the Wolverines are peaking at the right time, as they are currently on a four-match winning streak. UVU defeated NJIT at home on Oct. 5, 2-0, then won on the road last weekend at Howard (3-0) and South Carolina State (2-1).
Regan Benson leads the Wolverines with six goals and 14 points. Twenty of her 33 shots have been on target. Haley Curtis and Natalie Baker are both second on the team with three goals each, while Lexi Dunn and Kelsey Kimball Cook are tied for the team lead with three assists apiece.
Lauren Sack has seen the majority of time in goal and has a 3-5-0 record, with a 1.69 GAA and .750 save percentage. Jessica Duffin is 1-4-0 on the season with a 1.55 GAA and .791 save percentage. Sack was named GWC Defender of the Week on Oct. 2.
