Sam Houston State Slips Past Huskies, 2-1

HOUSTON – Houston Baptist lost its first match of the season, as Sam Houston State defeated the Huskies, 2-1, Sunday evening at Pritchett Field.

“We had a tough first half and we had to work really hard to get an answer to their goal,” said Molly Missimer. “Overall, I think our team worked very hard. It just wasn't our night.”

Missimer scored her second goal in as many games, assisted by Brandi Hart. Amina Radoncic had a team-high three shots.

Stephanie Castellon played all 90 minutes, allowing two goals and making three saves.

For the Bearkats, Jessica Toms and Tricia Mallory scored, while Amanda Biega and Hillary Ackerman recorded assists.

Michele McCullough also played the entire match in goal, allowing one goal and saving three shots.

SHSU scored the match's first goal, in the 33rd minute, as Toms scored, assisted by Biega.

Six minutes later, Missimer tied the match, assisted by Hart. The two teams entered the half tied at one with SHSU holding a slim 3-2 lead in shots.

The Bearkats scored the half's only goal, as Mallory scored in the 55th minute, assisted by Ackerman. Ackerman's pass found an open Mallory, who shot it into the goal from 12 yards out.

SHSU outshot the Huskies 10-8 in the match and also led 6-5 in corner kicks.

HBU (1-1) will head west next weekend, playing at UTEP on Friday, Aug. 26 at 8 pm CST and New Mexico State on Sunday, Aug. 29 at 2 pm CST.
