EDINBURG, Texas – Texas-Pan American hit 12-of-23 3-pointers and led wire-to-wire in a 76-60 victory over Houston Baptist in Great West Conference action Wednesday night at UTPA Fieldhouse.
Senior guard Andrew Gonzalez led the Huskies (3-20, 2-6 GWC) with 20 points, hitting 6-of-7, including 4-of-5 from behind the arc. Junior forward Terry Bembry added eight points, while senior guard Michael Moss led HBU with nine rebounds.
Aaron Urbanus hit 6-of-7 3-pointers and had a game-high 25 points, while Brandon Provost hit 5-of-9 from long range and finished with 22 points for the Broncs (4-19, 1-7), who snapped a 15-game losing streak. Ruben Cabrera added nine points.
UTPA jumped out to an 18-5 lead, which included a 9-0 run to start the game, but HBU answered with a 10-2, capped by freshman guard Jonathan Evans' 3-pointer at the 11:05 mark. The Broncs continued to pound inside with Cabrera and Urbanus got hot, hitting four threes in the half, as UTPA built a 42-29 lead by the break.
Gonzalez led the Huskies with 12 points in the first half, but Urbanus had 14, Provost had 11 and Cabrera had nine points and seven rebounds at the break. HBU shot 42 percent from the field and 40 percent (4-of-10) from long range, while UTPA shot 45 percent from the floor, but 47 percent (8-of-17) from behind the arc.
The Broncs opened up a 20-point lead with 12:29 remaining in the game, before Gonzalez hit back-to-back threes. The Huskies would get no closer the rest of the way as they never found a rhythm offensively.
The Huskies take a break from conference play to host East Texas Baptist Sunday at 2:05 p.m. at Sharp Gym.
