Late North Dakota Run Stifles HBU, 83-73

GRAND FORKS, N.D. – With Houston Baptist leading by three with just over six minutes remaining, North Dakota went on a 17-4 run the rest of the way to down the Huskies, 83-73, in Great West Conference basketball Saturday afternoon at the Betty Engelstad Sioux Center.
 

Senior guard Andrew Gonzalez led the Huskies (2-18, 1-4 GWC) with 23 points and eight rebounds, hitting 6-of-18 from the field, 3-of-6 from behind the arc, and 8-fo-9 from the free-throw line. Junior forward Terry Bembry added a career-high 16 points and five boards, while senior guard Michael Moss had 11 points, five rebounds and six assists.

 

Aaron Anderson led North Dakota (10-10, 3-1) with 16 points, hitting 12-of-14 from the free-throw line. Brandon Brekke and Josh Schuler each had 15 points, Patrick Mitchell had 11 points and eight rebounds, and Chris Clausen added 10 points for the Fighting Sioux.

 

Gonzalez hit a three, followed by a 3-point play and dished to a slashing Bembry for a layup that capped an 8-0 run that gave HBU a 56-55 lead with 13:47 left in the game. The game was tied four times over the next five minutes, but a pair of Moss free throws and a layup by Bembry put the Huskies up, 65-61, but he Fighting Sioux came right back to tie the game, 65-65, with 7:30 remaining. Gonzalez went to the line on two-straight trips and the Huskies led, 69-66, but North Dakota held the Huskies to just one field goal the rest of the way.

 

North Dakota took an early five-point lead, but HBU came back and took the lead on a Jonathan Evans 3-pointer. After the Fighting Sioux answered back with a layup to regain the lead, Obetoh broke away for a dunk and Daniels hit a three in the corner to give the Huskies a 20-16 lead. Back-to-back 3-pointers by Gonzalez and Daniels gave HBU its largest lead of the half at 26-18, but North Dakota responded with an 11-0 run, which included a pair of threes by Schuler, to take a 29-26 advantage. Bembry scored back-to-back baskets for a 30-29 Husky lead, but the Fighting Sioux scored the next seven. North Dakota led by as many as seven, and settled for a 41-36 lead at the break.

 

There were six lead changes and one tie in the first half. HBU shot 43.3 percent from the field and 63.6 percent (7-of-11) from behind the arc, while North Dakota shot 50 percent from the field and 50 percent (5-of-10) from 3-point range. Gonzalez had 10 at the half for the Huskies, while Brekke had nine for the Fighting Sioux.

 

For the game, HBU shot 42.4 percent from the field and 53.3 percent (8-of-15) from 3-point range, while North Dakota shot 51.1 percent from the field and 42.9 percent (6-of-14) from long distance. North Dakota had a huge advantage at the free-throw line, hitting 31-of-40, while HBU went, 15-of-22. The Huskies outrebounded the Fighting Sioux, 33-30, but North Dakota committed seven fewer turnovers, 17-10.

 
The Huskies return to action when they host Chicago State Thursday at 7:35 and Utah Valley Saturday at 7:35 p.m. at Sharp Gym.
