HACKENSACK, N.J. – Houston Baptist shot only 35.3 percent from the field and hit only four-of-17 from three-point range as the Huskies fell to Fairleigh Dickinson, 75-64, in non-conference basketball Monday night at Stratis Arena.
Senior guard Andrew Gonzalez scored 15 points to lead the Huskies (1-16), but went only 6-of-21 from the field. Junior forward Terry Bembry had 14 points and eight rebounds, while senior guard Michael Moss added 10 points.
Briahn Smith had a game-high 18 points for the Knights (4-12), while Mike Scott had 14 points, six rebounds and five assists. Kamil Svardlik had 13 points and 16 rebounds, while John Galvin also had a double-double with 11 points and 16 rebounds.
There were three ties and eight lead changes in the first 13 minutes of the game, and Ben Daniels' free throws with 6:21 remaining in the frame tied the game, 24-24. The Huskies then went cold as the Knights went on a 14-0 run over the next four minutes. A bizarre play at the end of the half was a gift that got HBU back to within single digits. Moss grabbed a rebound on an FDU missed shot with one second left, and the Knights committed an inexplicable foul as he attempted to heave the ball from the opposite free throw line. Moss made all three free throws with no time remaining to cut FDU's lead to 40-31 at the break. Bembry led the Huskies with 10 points and five rebounds in the half, while Scott had 13 points for the Knights.
HBU cut FDU's lead to six on Moss's jumper with 17:34 left in the second half, but the Knights answered back with two quick buckets to go back up by 10. Ben Daniels hit a three from the corner with 2:14 on the clock to get HBU back within six again, but the Huskies couldn't get any shots to fall until the Knights had already put the game away from the line.
FDU shot 43.4 percent from the field and 44.4 percent (8-of-18) from behind the arc. The Knights dominated the glass, outrebounding the Huskies, 52-31.
The Huskies return to Great West Conference play when they host Texas-Pan American Saturday at 7:35 p.m. at Sharp Gym.
