HOUSTON – Houston Baptist senior guard Andrew Gonzalez had 27 points, seven rebounds, three assists and five steals to lead the Huskies to their first win of the season, 88-81, over Texas State in non-conference basketball Saturday night at Sharp Gym.
Gonzalez shot 10-of-18 from the field and 6-of-9 from the free throw line as the Huskies (1-6) had four double figure scorers for the first time this season. Freshman guard T.J. Berry hit 3-of-4 3-pointers en route to a career-high 17 points. Senior guard Michael Moss had 15 points, five rebounds and five assists, and junior forward Terry Bembry finished with 12 points and seven rebounds after being held scoreless in the first half. Junior forward Sammy Obetoh added eight points and led the Huskies with nine rebounds.
The Bobcats (2-4) had five players score in double figures, led by Jonathan Sloan, who had 14 points and nine rebounds. Cameron Johnson added 12, while Travis Jones and John Bowman each had 11. A.J. Stewart had 10 points, eight rebounds and five blocked shots, and Tony Bishop tied for the game high with nine rebounds.
The lead changed hands three times and the game was tied three times in the first 10 minutes of the second half, but Gonzalez's jumper with with 9:31 to go put the Huskies up for good at 61-60. The Huskies led 63-62 when Bembry heated up. He scored the Huskies' next 10 points, but they still only led 73-70, until Gonzalez hit a three and Obetoh's dunk on a great feed from Bembry gave HBU an eight-point lead with 3:25 left.
The Bobcats got to within five twice down the stretch, but Berry's breakaway dunk with seven seconds provided the punctuation mark as the Huskies put the game away.
Texas State jumped out to a double-digit lead early as it took a 17-7 lead just six minutes into the game. The Bobcats led, 26-16, but the Huskies went on a 15-2 run to take a 31-28 lead with 5:48 remaining in the half. The Bobcats rebounded to go back up by as many as five and took a 42-41 lead into the break. Gonzalez had 18 points in the first half, while Berry hit three 3-pointers and had 12 for the Huskies. Sloan had 10 points and six rebounds for the Bobcats.
HBU shot 52.2 percent (35-for-67) from the field for the game, while Texas State shot 42.9 percent (30-for-70). The Huskies shot 57.1 percent from the free throw line, hitting 17-of-30, while the Bobcats shot 56.7 percent, hitting 17-of-30. HBU also hit 6-of-13 from behind the arc, while Texas State hit only 4-of-17. The Bobcats outrebounded the Huskies, 45-39, including 18-11 on the offensive glass.
The Huskies return to action when they hit the road to face South Alabama Sunday, Dec. 12 at 2:05 p.m. in Mobile, Ala.
