KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Missouri-Kansas City nailed 12 3-pointers and played stifling defense to come away with a 73-51 victory over Houston Baptist in non-conference basketball Tuesday night at Swinney Recreation Center.
Senior guard Michael Moss led HBU (1-10) with 18 points and eight rebounds, while freshman guard T.J. Berry added 10 points. Senior guard Andrew Gonzalez was held to six points on 2-of-9 shooting.
Reggie Chamberlain hit 5-of-8 3-pointers and led UMKC with 23 points. Bakari Lewis added 15 points, Jay Cousinard had 14 points, six rebounds and six assists and Spencer Johnson had 13 points and a game-high nine rebounds.
UMKC started the game with an 8-0 run over the first three minutes, but Moss got the HBU back in the game, scoring the Huskies' first seven points as they cut the lead to 17-14. The Kangaroos led by five with 6:36 remaining in the half, but went on a 12-2 run to take a 35-20 lead. Freshman guard T.J. Berry's three at the buzzer cut the UMKC lead to 36-26 heading into the break. Moss led HBU with 11 points in the frame, while Reggie Chamberlain led UMKC with 10. The Kangaroos shot 7-of-18 from 3-point range in the half, forced 14 Husky turnovers and held Gonzalez to two points.
The Kangaroos also had an 8-0 run early in the second half to take a 52-32 lead, but the Huskies bounced back with a 13-4 spurt to cut the lead to 11 with 7:47 remaining. HBU then went scoreless for the next three minutes as UMKC put the game away.
UMKC shot 47.5 percent from the field for the game and 38.7 percent (12-of-31) from behind the arc, while holding HBU to 40.0 percent from the field and 31.3 percent (5-of-16) from long range. The Kangaroos outrebounded the Huskies, 34-33, and won the turnover battle, 21-14.
The Huskies will have some time off during the Christmas break before hosting Wyoming Friday, Dec. 31 at 2:05 p.m. at Sharp Gym.
