HOUSTON – Louisiana Tech got good looks inside and used a high-percentage attack to power past Houston Baptist, 80-57, in non-conference basketball Tuesday night at Sharp Gym.
HBU senior guard Andrew Gonzalez led the Huskies (1-8) with 31 points, one shy of his career high, nine rebounds and three blocked shots. He hit 10-of-19 from the field, including 5-of-6 from 3-point range, and hit 6-of-7 from the line. Freshman guard T.J. Berry added seven points off the bench.
Olu Ashaolu had 21 points, 13 rebounds and a pair of blocks for the Bulldogs (8-4), while DeAndre Brown sccored 14, and Cordarius Johnson added 12.
Louisiana Tech shot 53.8 percent from the field for the game and outscored HBU, 46-14, in the paint. The Huskies shot only 31.6 percent from the field and were outrebounded, 42-35.
The Bulldogs used a 12-2 run early in the first half to take a 21-9 lead, but the Huskies battled back and cut the lead to four at 33-29 with 4:06 left in the frame. Louisiana Tech, which shot 58.1 percent in the half, took a 43-35 lead into the break.
Another early run, this time 8-0 in the second half, gave Louisiana Tech a 17-point lead with 14:37 to play and the Bulldogs continued to pound the ball inside to solidify the win.
HBU hits the road for a pair of games when it faces Santa Clara at 9 p.m. CDT Friday in California, followed by UMKC at 7:05 p.m. in Kansas City.
