Arizona State Turns Back HBU Rally, 73-55

ANCHORAGE, Alaska – Houston Baptist senior guard Andrew Gonzalez scored 26 points, but Arizona State dominated the glass en route to a 73-55 victory over the Huskies in the opening round of the Carrs Safeway Great Alaska Shootout Thursday night at Sullivan Arena.

Gonzalez shot 9-of-16 from the field and 7-of-9 from the free throw line as he scored at least 20 points for the sixth straight game dating back to last season. Sophomore guard Miles Dixon added 14 points and led the Huskies (0-4) with six rebounds. Senior guard Michael Moss tied for the game high with six assists.

Trent Lockett had 18 points, nine rebounds and six assists for ASU (2-1), while Kyle Cain had 13 points and 17 rebounds. Keala King also had 13 points, while Rihards Kuksiks got hot late to finish with 12 points. Jamelle McMillan had seven points, eight rebounds, six assists and four steals for the Sun Devils.

ASU shot 43.8 percent from the field for the game, while HBU shot 37.7 percent. The Sun Devils were 6-of-27 (22.2 percent) and only 11-of-26 from the free-throw line, while the Huskies were 3-of-13 (23.1 percent) from behind the arc and 12-of-20 from the charity stripe. The Sun Devils outrebounded the Huskies, 49-29, including 21-8 on the offensive boards.

HBU trailed 32-19 at halftime, but Gonzalez scored nine points in the first four minutes as the Huskies started to chip away at the deficit. A 3-pointer by Gonzalez and a pair of free throws on the next possession got the Huskies back to within five at 49-44 with 9:58 left in the game, but Kuksiks first 3-pointer of the game halted the comeback. ASU led 59-53, then scored the next 13 points as it finished with a 15-2 run over the final 5:48.

After the Huskies scored the first three points of the game, the Sun Devils scored the next 12 points as part of a 19-5 run. ASU's largest lead in the first half was 15 points on two occasions, including one with seven seconds remaining, but Gonzalez, who scored 10 in the first half, hit a running jumper off the glass to end the half. Lockett had nine points to lead ASU at the break.

The Huskies continue play at the Great Alaska Shootout when they face the loser between Weber State and Alaska-Anchorage at 5 p.m. CDT (2 p.m. in Alaska) Friday.
