Merrell earned his first career victory on Oct. 11 at the Connecticut Cup. He fired a one-under par 71 for a 54-hole total of 2-under par 214 to claim the title. Merrell finished one stroke ahead of second-place finisher, Branden Chikorca of Rhode Island. It was the first individual title for the Huskies since they were reinstated back to NCAA Division I.
