GREELEY, Colo. - Houston Baptist junior centerfielder Paul Prestera singled in game one and tripled in game two to extend his hitting streak to 23 games, but the Huskies dropped both games, 6-2 and 3-1, of a Great West Conference doubleheader to Northern Colorado Saturday at Jackson Field.
In game one, Joe Sawicki went the distance, allowing two runs, one earned, on four hits to lead the Bears (16-19, 7-3 GWC). T.J. Berge went 2-for-3 with a triple, an RBI and two runs scored, while Jarod Berggren and Tony Crudo had two hits apiece.
Sophomore designated hitter Robbie Buller and junior first baseman Chase Hernandez each drove in a run for the Huskies (15-21, 5-5). Sophomore Dalton Schafer took the loss for HBU, allowing five runs, four earned, on 10 hits in 7 1/3 innings.
UNC took the lead in the third when Berge delivered an RBI triple and scored on a passed ball. The Huskies cut the lead to 2-1 on Hernandez's RBI single in the fourth. The Bears broke the game open in the eighth as Seth Budde had a sacrifice fly, Kyle Hardman had an RBI single, and Casey Coy had an RBI single
In the second game, Joe Willman also pitched a complete game for the Bears, allowing one run on five hits in seven innings. Berggren, Berge and Crudo each had two hits for UNC.
Sophomore rightfielder Kolby Arnst went 2-for-3 for the Huskies, while senior catcher Johnathon Moore drove in the only run.
HBU took the lead in the third when Moore followed back-to-back walks by Prestera and senior shortstop Zeke Zikeli with an RBI single up the middle.
UNC answered in the bottom of the inning on a sacrifice fly by Tyler Borzileri. The Bears added a run in the fourth on Crudo's RBI double and another in the fifth on Berge's RBI single.
HBU junior lefthander Jamie Storey took the loss, allowing three runs on 10 hits in 5 2/3 innings.
The series concludes with a doubleheader Sunday at 11 a.m. due to the postponement of Friday's game.
