Biography

2018-19 (Junior): Gates appeared in 28 games off the bench for the Huskies as a junior, averaging 13.1 minutes per game…averaged 8.8 points per game to rank third on the team in scoring and was second in made three-pointers with 47…moved into fifth on the program’s all-time made three-pointers list with 149 for his career…shot 32.4 percent (47-of-145) from beyond the arc…led the team in scoring five times…shot 82.1 percent (64-of-78) from the free throw line for the 15th-best single-season free throw percentage in program history…scored a season-high 25 points against Incarnate Word (03/06), connecting on 11-of-12 from the charity stripe and going 4-of-7 from three-point range…matched a career-high with six threes in the Huskies’ win at Wake Forest (11/23), scoring 20 points to lead the team in scoring…connected on five three-pointers at Samford (12/17) and totaled 17 points…made four three-pointers against Lamar (03/19) and led the Huskies in scoring with 19…scored in double-figures 11 times, reaching at least 20 points two times…made at least three treys in a game nine times...his 47 made three-pointers ranked 19th in the Southland Conference.

2017-18 (Sophomore): Gates appeared in all 31 games while starting nine, averaging 18.5 minutes per game…finished fourth on the team in scoring with 11.5 points per game while also adding 1.4 rebounds…made 75 three-pointers on the season, the ninth-highest single-season total in program history…led the Huskies in scoring six times, coming off the bench on four of those occasions…scored a career-high 26 points on 9-of-19 shooting against McNeese (01/20)…scored 23 points while knocking down a career-best six three-pointers against Incarnate Word (01/24)…scored 23 points against Barclay (12/15) and Incarnate Word (01/24)…added 21 points at Stephen F. Austin (01/31) and scored 20 against New Orleans (12/30)…reached double-digits in scoring 17 times…pulled down a career-high four rebounds at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (01/27)…recorded a career-best two steals against Central Arkansas (02/07)…shot 76.9 percent (60-of-78) from the free throw line…ranked third in the Southland Conference in made threes and was 26th in the conference in scoring…in SLC play, averaged 12.8 points per game for the second-best mark on the team…tied for second in the league in made threes and tied for 26th in conference scoring.

2016-17 (Freshman): Started five games while appearing in 24, averaging 4.7 points per game…scored a career-high 13 points against Randall (2/18), making a career-high four three-pointers…was third on the team with 27 three-pointers made, shooting 30.7 percent (27-of-88) from beyond the arc…shot 83.3 percent (20-of-24) at the free throw line…began his collegiate career with nine points at Texas Tech (11/11) followed by 10 points at New Mexico (11/14).

High School: Gates was a two-year starter at Clemens High School in Schertz, Texas, for coach Clifton Ellis…averaged 16 points, three assists and three rebounds per game for his career, shooting 45 percent from the field and 49 percent from 3-point range…played AAU for Team Hoopdreams, averaging 23 points, four assists and four rebounds per game, while shooting 53 percent from the floor, 65 percent from long distance and 94 percent from the free-throw line…his team won more than 20 championships.
 
Personal: Son of Will Sr. and Catherine Gates…has two brothers, Will Jr. and Marques, and one sister, Alicia…father, Will Sr., was featured in the critically acclaimed 1994 documentary Hoop Dreams…brother, Will Jr., was a member of the HBU basketball team from 2015-18.
