Terry Johnson

Terry Johnson is now in his third season as an assistant coach for the Huskies. He serves as recruiting coordinator while helping lead the administrative side of the program.

Johnson’s work on the staff helped the Huskies show substantial improvement during the 2024-25 season. Picked to finish last (12th) in the Southland Conference pre-season poll, HCU finished tied for seventh place while doubling the win total from the previous season from six wins to 12. The Huskies tallied nine Southland victories which were the most conference wins in a season in eight years.

Johnson came to HCU after spending two seasons at California State-Northridge, where he served under his father and longtime college coach, Trent Johnson.

He is currently one of just three coaches with over eight or more years of experience in the Southland Conference. Johnson served at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi from 2014-21 where he was an assistant coach for five seasons and Director of Operations for two.

Johnson helped TAMUCC to appearances in the SLC Tournament title game in 2016 and again in 2017 when the Islanders advanced to the championship game of the CIT postseason tournament.

The Islanders went on a strong three-season run from 2014-17. In 14-15, the Islanders finished 21-13 with a berth in the CIT where they defeated Florida Gulf Coast University. The next season, TAMUCC went 25-8 overall and 15-3 in SLC play to finish second in the league and establish a program-high for wins in a single season. The Islanders advanced to the SLC Championship game and again to the CIT.

In 2016-17, Johnson coached six All-Conference players as the Islanders ended the campaign with a 24-12 record and a second straight second place finish in the regular season as well as a second straight trip to the Southland Championship game.

Prior to his time in Corpus Christi, Johnson had coaching stints at University of St. Thomas, as well as his alma mater, California State-Stanislaus.

At St. Thomas, he helped lead the Celts to a runner-up finish in the Red River Athletic Conference Tournament and a berth in the NAIA National Tournament, where they fell to eventual runner-up Emmanuel College.

Johnson spent two years at Stanislaus from 2009-11 as an assistant to the late Larry Reynolds.

He began his college playing career at Moorpark College where he spent a gray-shirt year before playing two seasons. The Raiders averaged 21 wins per season and qualified for the California Junior College Tourament all three years Johnson was there.

Johnson spent the remaining two years of his college career at Stanislaus, where he helped the Warriors to a win over Santa Clara in his first season. He ended his time with the Warriors ranked in the top 10 in blocked shots before graduating with a degree in Kinesiology.
