HOUSTON – The HCU volleyball squad returned to Houston this weekend for the Houston Invitational, stopping first at H&PE Arena for a matchup against the Texas Southern Tigers, with both teams looking for their first wins of the season.
HCU got off to a strong start, winning the first set 25-22, which included early momentum through a 14-7 lead. Texas Southern battled back in the second set, going back and forth with the Huskies, ultimately winning through a late rally in the set with a score of 25-20. The Huskies were able to make quick work of the third set, taking on an 11-point lead down the stretch, winning the set 25-12. HCU finished out the match strong in the fourth set, taking and keeping a lead from the start to down the Tigers in four sets for HCU's first win of the 2026 season.
Leading the Huskies offensively was the tandem of
Katy Barger, who had 13 kills, and
Sa'Myah Medford, with 11 kills. Defensively, the Huskies were led by
Bianca Byerly, who had 15 digs, and
Ensilina Savelio, who earned 12 digs, while also adding 39 assists in the match.
HCU faces a doubleheader tomorrow, first against Abilene Christian at 12 pm in H&PE Arena. The Huskies will then face UH at 6:30 pm at the Fertitta Center in an ESPN+ televised match.
