EDINBURG, Texas – HCU fired 14 shots on goal and scored four times en route to a decisive 4-1 victory over UT Rio Grande Valley on Sunday at the UTRGV Soccer and Track & Field Complex for the Huskies' first Southland Conference win of the season.
The Huskies (5-3-3, 1-0-1 SLC) took control from the start, testing UT Rio Grande Valley (4-6-1, 0-1-1 SLC) goalkeeper Mariana Amezcua early with three shots on goal within the first seven minutes. Not much later, in the 10th minute, Isabella Dillow dribbled into the box before directing a pass to the far post where Paisley Barela was waiting for an easy tap-in and a 1-0 HCU lead. Just over six minutes on, Olivia Rossman dribbled past a defender and, from the end line, sent a cross into the area where Barela met the pass and scored her second goal of the day to give the Huskies a two-goal advantage.
The Vaqueros answered with a goal of their own at the 31:00 mark of the game with their lone shot on goal of the contest, a score by Anuhea Aalona. HCU nearly got its third goal in the 36th minute but Veronica Pacione made a save on a penalty kick taken by Zylee Dominguez. The Huskies got that third goal in short order, however, on a Madison Stormberg goal off a corner kick that touched a few players before Stormberg took blasted the goal home with an assist from Ella Remy. HCU kept the pressure on in the second half and the team's fourth goal came with just 2:33 left to play on a penalty kick by Ella Remy.
Barela's two goals tie her with Dillow for the team lead this season, with five. Remy, meanwhile, scored and had an assist, moving her to two goals and three assists overall. Stormberg's goal was her third of the year while Dillow and Rossman each now have three assists.
HCU out-shot the Vaqueros, 21-5, overall with 14 shots on goal to UTRGV's one. Additionally, the Huskies earned 10 corner kicks while limiting UTRGV to just two.
The Huskies will host Stephen F. Austin this coming Thursday, Oct. 1, at 7:00 p.m. at Sorrels Field.
