HAMMOND, La. – The HCU baseball team suffered a sweep at the hand of the Southeastern Lions on Sunday afternoon at Pat Kennelly Diamond at Alumni Field, falling to the hosts by a 4-1 final.
The Huskies (18-24, 10-14 SLC) stranded a runner on third in the top of the first before falling behind on a leadoff home run by SLU (28-17, 16-8 SLC) second baseman Ben Robichaux to stake the Lions to a 1-0 lead. Southeastern loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the second but HCU starter
Louis Castano managed to get out of the jam allowing just one runner to score.
HCU again put traffic on the bases in the third with
Walker Bazile drawing a leadoff walk followed by a single by
Jeremy Rader. An
Anthony Avalos sacrifice bunt moved the runners into scoring position but the Huskies were unable to push a run across. The Lions then scored their third run of the day on a Justin Williams solo homer.
The Huskies stranded runners in both the fifth and sixth innings before getting on the board in the seventh. Bazile led off the inning with a double to right center, moving up to third on an error by the SLU center fielder. Rader than doubled to right center to score Bazile from third but he was thrown out trying to stretch it to a triple. A solo home run from Peyton Woods accounted for the Lions' fourth run in the eighth inning.
Rader ended the day 3-for-5 at the plate as the Huskies ended the day with three doubles among their seven hits. Castano was handed the loss on the mound, falling to 2-2 on the season. The senior allowed three earned runs in five innings pitched, striking out four, walking two and giving up five hits.
The Huskies head to Prairie View, Texas for a 2:00 p.m. matchup against Prairie View A&M on Tuesday, Apr. 28, at 2:00 p.m.
