SB: Bailey walk-off douses Demons to salvage series finale for Huskies

HCU gets much-needed victory behind strong complete-game effort of Leah Hammack

HOUSTON --- Maddy Bailey smoked a single to left to plate Ella Herrewig with the game-winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning as Houston Christian University walked off Northwestern State University 3-2 at Husky Field on Friday afternoon. The Huskies manufactured all three runs to salvage the finale of the conference-opening three-game series for the Huskies and make a winner of Leah Hammack, who went the distance on a nifty five-hitter.

After sweeping a pair of games in a lengthy double-dip on Thursday evening, the Demons were right back at it on Friday, plating two runs in the first frame to put the Huskies in a hole. JT Smith was hit by a pitch to lead off the innings and moved to second on a groundout. Brynn Daniel then brought her in with a double to shallow left for a 1-0 lead. The second run would come across moments later as with runners on the corners, Sophia Livers grounded out to score Daniel to double the margin.

In the third Ella Herrewig led off with a single off NSU pitcher Mattison Buster's glove. Jocelyn Briseno then followed with a single through the left side and Madison Dominguez loaded the bases with a bunt single. A failed squeeze attempt resulted in Herrewig stealing home, with Briseno and Dominguez moving up a bag as well. Witih one out, Maddy Bailey walked to load the bases again, and this time, a perfectly dropped bunt by Chloe Foster brought home a second run to knot things up.

From there, the pitchers took over as Buster and Hammack engaged in strong back-and-forth battle that yielded just three singles between the two clubs for the next three and half frames.

In the bottom of the seventh, it was Herrewig again igniting the inning with a leadoff double to the gap in left center. A sac bunt by Briseno pushed Herrewig to third base with one out, and from there, the Demons elected to intentionally walk both Dominguez and pinch-hitter Jade Moreno to set up a force at every base.

Maddy Bailey then made good with a missile to left field that plated Herrewig with the game-winner that prevented a sweep by the Demons.

The Huskies finally got past Buster, who had won both games of the doubleheader on Thursday with a complete game in the opener and 3.1 innings of relief in the nightcap. HCU had eight hits on the day, with Dominguez, Bailey and Herrewig each going 2-3.

Dominguez extended her hitting streak to 12 games and had two stolen bases, while Herrewig scored twice. Bailey and Chloe Foster, who went 1-3, had an RBI apiece.

Hammack (1-3) was the winner with her best outing of the season. She went the full seven, scattering five hits and worked out of a two-on, no-out jam in the seventh to keep the game deadlocked. She ended the day with just the two runs allowed in the first to go with two walks and one strikeout.
Sophia Livers went 1-3 with an RBI and Brynn Daniel went 1-4 with an RBI for Northwestern State (11-14 | 2-1 SLC). Buster (9-6) was saddled with the defeat, as she went 6.1 and allowed eight hits. She allowed three runs, walked three and fanned three in her third decision in the three-game series.

HCU improves to 4-18 on the season and 1-2 in the Southland. The Huskies will be off until next weekend when they travel to Hammond, Louisiana to take on two-time defending SLC champion Southeastern Louisiana University in a three-game series set to start on Friday afternoon.
