SB: Huskies felled by Northwestern State in SLC opening pair

HCU will look to salvage series finale at noon on Friday

HOUSTON --- Houston Christian University opened the Southland Conference slate with two defeats, falling to Northwestern State University 7-1 and 11-6 at Husky Field on Thursday evening. The wins snapped a six-game winning streak for the Huskies against the Demons.

HCU is now 3-18 on the season and 0-2 in the Southland. The Huskies will look to salvage the series finale on Friday when they host the Demons (11-13) for a noon first pitch.

GAME 1

Northwestern State put single runs up in the first three innings, the first two coming with the help of HCU errors. In the third, Aly Delafield doubled to left center to bring in Brynn Daniel and give the visitors a 3-0 cushion.

That would be more than enough for reigning SLC Pitcher of the Week Mattison Buster, who shut down the HCU bats for five scoreless innings before the hosts got on the board on a RBI fielder's choice by Chloe Phe that scored Maddy Bailey in the sixth.

Madison Dominguez and Ella Herrewig each went 1-2 while Maddy Bailey went 1-3 with the run scored. Addy Prasifka (0-6) took the loss, going 3.2 innings before giving way to Jade Moreno, who went the final 3.1 and allowed just one run with four strikeouts.

Buster (7-5) went the distance, allowing just the four hits and one run while walking three and fanning four on 96 pitches. She was aided by two hit-games from Britt Bourgoyne and Daniel, with Riley Schwisow going 1-3 with two runs scored for NSU (10-13 / 1-0).

GAME 2

NSU kept the momentum going from game one, putting up crooked numbers in the first and third to take a 7-0 lead. Peyton Young had an RBI single and Makynlie Jones stole home in a three-run opening frame, and Sophia Livers had a two-run single to shallow center as part of a three-run third.

The Huskies rallied in the bottom of the third, scoring five times before an out was recorded. Madison Dominguez and Raenna Liscano drew back-to-back walks to open the inning to bring up Maddy Bailey, who drove a laser to the gap in left center for a two-run double.

Bailey then scored on double down the right field line by Chloe Foster, who would in turn score on the third straight double of the inning, a line drive just over the bag at third base by Leah Hammack that cut the gap to 7-4.

After Breana Herrera and Karlie Barba walked to load the bags, Tayden Alexander hit into an RBI fielder's choice with Hammack scoring to make the scored 7-5, but the Huskies would get no more.

The Demons then blew the game open in the seventh by paper cuts. NSU got its first run on a passed ball, then got a bases loaded walk by Sara Watson to make the score 9-5. Another RBi hit by Livers doubled the lead at 10-5 before a sacrifice fly by JT Smith sent the home team down 11-5 heading to their last at-bats.

A Madison Dominquez triple down the right field line scored Tayden Alexander for the final run of the contest in the bottom half.

HCU had 10 hits, led by Dominguez, Maddy Bailey and Chloe Foster, each of whom went 2-4. Dominguez upped her hitting streak to 11 games and had an RBI and run, Bailey scored once and drove in two and Foster scored once and had a ribbie as well.

Cara Pitman (1-7) suffered the defeat, lasting just 2.2 innings and allowing seven runs. Leah Hammack tossed 3.1 innings of relief trying to keep the Huskies in it until the seventh, when she gave up four runs.

Mattison Buster (9-5) came on in relief and went 3.1 innings allowing three hits and one run to pick up her second win of the day. Sophia Livers led a 12-hit attack going 2-3 with three RBI and Watson, Smith and Jones each added two hits for Northwestern State (11-13 / 2-0).
