SB: Huskies toppled twice by Lumberjacks

HCU will look to salvage series finale at noon on Saturday

HOUSTON --- Houston Christian University dropped both ends of a twin-bill on Friday afternoon as Stephen F. Austin State University toppled the Huskies with 4-1 and 6-0 victories at Husky Field.

HCU (5-26 / 2-9 SLC) will look to salvage the series finale against the Lumberjacks (19-16 / 4-7 SLC) on Saturday when the two teams hook up for a noon start.

GAME 1

SFA jumped on the board in the first frame with two runs. Kaylee Paul and Ellie Vance had back-to-back one-out singles and moved up a base on a groundout. Malia Jones then singled through the left side to bring both in for an early 2-0 Lumberjacks lead.

The Huskies cut the deficit in half in the second inning as Jade Moreno blasted the first pitch of the game to deep right center, her fourth of the season.

The Jacks got that run back in the third and then tacked on another in the fifth. Adelyn Becerra reached on an error, swiped second and moved to third on the throwing error. Again it was Jones, who singled to right center to push the Jacks lead to 3-1. In the fifth, SFA loaded the bases and scored once on an RBI groundout by Kara Pride.

Raenna Liscano went 2-3 for HCU with Moreno going 1-3 with the homer. Cara Pitman (1-10) went the distance, allowing nine hits and the four runs, three earned while fanning four.

Crimson Bryant (5-6) tossed a complete game with seven K's and one run allowed. Ellie Vance went 3-4 with two runs scored and Malia Jones was 2-3 with three RBI.

GAME 2

Game two mirrored the first, as the Jacks put two early runs up in the opening frame. This time it was Becerra doing the damage with a two run single through the right side that scored Jamie Varga and Kaylee Paul for a 2-0 lead.

The lead grew to three in the third on an RBI groundout by Becerra, and in the fourth the Jacks broke the game open with a three-spot, highlighted by a two-RBI triple to right field by Paul.

Jocelyn Briseno and Chloe Foster each went 1-3 for the Huskies, who managed just three hits off Amelia Hatthorn (6-2), who fanned four on an efficient 80-pitch complete game.

Kaylee Paul went 3-3 with two RBI and three runs scored while Ellie Vance notched her second three-hit game of the doubleheader, going 3-3 with an RBI.

Leah Hammack (2-6) took the loss for HCU, while Addy Prasifka tossed 3.1 innings, allowing just two hits to go with six strikeouts.
