SB: HCU and TAMUCC split pair on Friday at Husky Field

Huskies get solid pitching in both games, with Hammack gem earning much-needed win

HOUSTON --- Leah Hammack's complete game gem gave HCU a 6-1 victory in the back-end of a twin-bill with visiting Texas A&M-Corpus Christi to help the Huskies split the pair on Friday at Husky Field. The Islanders won a pitching duel in the opener with a 3-1 decision.

The Huskies (5-22 / 2-6 SLC) and Islanders (9-22 / 3-5 SLC) will play the rubber game of the series tomorrow with first pitch slated for noon.

GAME 1

Cara Pitman and Kendra Winfrey locked up in a pitcher's duel with the Islanders putting two runs on the board in the second frame that stood up.

Jada Zepeda cranked a two-run single up the middle to score Eva Gallego and Erynne Castillo, and the Islanders tacked on another in the third when Gallegos doubled down the left field line to bring in Kayla Santiago for a 3-0 lead.

The Huskies would get one back in the bottom of the sixth as Madison Dominguez singled and stole second before moving to third on a groundout. Maddy Bailey then reached on a fielding error that brought Dominguez in to cut the deficit to 3-1. HCU would put two on with one out in the seventh, but Winfrey shut the door with back-to-back strikeouts to finish off the TAMUCC victory.

Pitman (1-9) went the distance on 120 pitches, scattering six hits and three runs while striking out a season-high four. Jocelyn Briseno had two of HCU's three hits.

Winfrey (6-7) allowed just three hits and the one earned run while fanning eight. Jada Zepeda went 2-4 with two RBI and Eva Gallegos added two hits and a run driven in.

GAME 2

The tables turned in the second game, as the Huskies jumped out quickly, putting a crooked number up in the first frame on one swing of the bat.

Jocelyn Briseno singled up the middle with one out and Maddy Bailey followed with a four-pitch walk. Then with two outs, Chloe Foster picked the most opportune of times for her first career jack, a monstrous shot to left field that put the Huskies up 3-0.

TAMUCC manufactured a run in the second as pinchrunner Mackenzie Durr scored from third on a wild pitch. That would be all for the Islanders however, as Hammack retired 12 of the next 15 before working out of a bases loaded jam in the seventh with the aid of a second double-play of the contest.

HCU put three more on the board in the sixth with Heidi Maytum getting a sacrifice fly before back-to-back RBI doubles by Breana Herrera and Raenna Liscano that pushed the lead to 6-1.

Hammack (2-4) would allow just six hits and gave up the one run while walking two and getting two punch-outs. Raenna Liscano went 3-3 with two doubles and an RBI, while Foster had the three-run homer in a 1-3 night.

Josie Whitehead took the defeat (3-9) for TAMUCC, giving up three earned runs in 5.2 innings. Erynne Castillo went 3-3 to lead the Islander offense.
