SB: Huskies drop weekend finale to Islanders

TAMUCC takes series 2-1; HCU heads across town to TSU on Tuesday

HOUSTON --- Houston Christian University dropped the rubber match of a three-game series with Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Saturday afternoon as the Islanders claimed the series with a 6-2 victory at Husky Field.

TAMUCC put up a quick three runs in their opening trip to the plate. Zoey Stewart tripled to deep right on the third pitch of the contests and Jada Zepeda followed with an infield single and stolen base to put runners on second and third. Mimi Thornton reached on a fielder's choice that claimed Stewart at home, but she moved to second when a failed pickoff allowed Zepeda to score from third.

Skylar Heger doubled to right to push Thornton across the plate  and an RBI single by Eva Gallegos through the left side plated Hager to make it 3-0 Islanders.

HCU responded in the bottom half. Maddy Bailey singled with two outs, and Jade Moreno chased her home with a towering blast to left field, her third of the season, to cut the deficit to 3-2.

The Islanders came right back with a run in the second on a fielder's choice, and in the third, Karisa Lopez had a two-run double to push the visitor's advantage to 6-2.

That's where it would stay, as Friday's opening starter Kendra Winfrey came in relief in the third and proceeded to shut down the Huskies on three hits with four strikeouts in five innings of work for her second victory on the weekend.

Moreno went 1-2 with the homer and two RBI and four other Huskies collected one hit apiece. Leah Hammack (2-5) took the loss, going just one inning after tossing a complete game gem in the second game on Friday. Addy Prasifka, the third of three hurlers used by the Huskies, went 4.2 innings of hitless relief and tied a personal best with six strikeouts.

Seven different Islanders (10-22, 4-5 SLC) had one hit, led by Karissa Lopez who went 1-3 with two RBI. Mackenzie Durr went the first two innings allowing two runs on two hits before Winfrey's relief work.

HCU falls to 5-23 overall and 2-6 in the Southland. The Huskies will travel across town on Tuesday to take on longtime foe Texas Southern University before returning home for a three-game series with Stephen F. Austin State University next Friday and Saturday.
