SB: Huskies fall to Fairfield in finale of UH Tournament

HCU hosts Houston Invitational at Husky Field next Friday and Saturday

HOUSTON --- Houston Christian University dropped the fourth and final game of the University of Houston Tournament, falling 13-6 to Fairfield University on Saturday morning at Cougar Softball Stadium. The Stags used the long-ball and scored in all but one frame to knock off the Huskies for the second time on the weekend.

Fairfield jumped out to an early lead in the first. After two quick outs, the Stags strung together three straight hits, the final a three-run homer by Quinn McGonigle to center field for a 3-0 advantage. The Huskies would respond in the bottom of the inning, putting two runners on via a leadoff walk to Tayden Alexander and a single by Cara Pitman. Karlie Barba then singled home Alexander and a sacrifice fly by Chloe Foster drove in Pitman and HCU trailed just 3-2 after one.

The Stags doubled the lead in the second inning, then put two runs on the board in each of the next two innings, highlighted by a two-run homer by Cara Kochakian in the third and solo shot by Ava Armuth in the fourth.

A four-spot by Fairfield in the top of the sixth was quickly answered equally by the Huskies in the bottom of the frame. Jade Moreno launched a one-out homer to deep left, and HCU would load the bases when Maddy Bailey singled, Ella Herrewig reached on an error and Madison Dominguez walked. Jocelyn Briseno then doubled to left field to clear the bags and cut the deficit in half.

Cara Pitman went 2-4 with a run scored to lead the Huskies. Briseno was 1-2 with the three RBI, while Moreno went 1-2 with her first dinger of the season. Madison Dominguez went 1-2 with a run scored and Karlie Barba and Chloe Foster each collected a hit and RBI in three at-bats.

Pitman was the losing hurler on this day, going 2.2 innings and allowing six runs. Moreno went 3.1 in relief and Leah Hammack tossed one to finish the game off.

Chela Kovar got the win in relief for Fairfield, going 2.2 innings and allowing four runs on four hits. Samantha Dougherty and Ava Armuth both went 3-5, and Armuth, Cara Kochakian and Quinn McGonigle each hit a homer. Kochakian and McGonigle led the Stags (2-1) with three RBI each.

HCU falls to 0-4 on the season. The Huskies will return to action next week as they host half of the Houston Invitational along with the University of Houston. The Huskies will host a triple-header on both Friday and Saturday, playing twice on each afternoon. The tournament at Husky Field kicks off on Friday as Pittsburgh and Michigan hook up at noon. The Huskies will play Pitt at 2:30 followed by Michigan at 5 pm.
