SB: Huskies drop games to Pitt and Michigan to open home slate

HCU faces Penn State and Lafayette on Day 2 of Houston Invitational at Husky Field

HOUSTON --- Houston Christian University opened the home portion of the 2026 slate with a pair of losses to Power 4 opponents on the first day of the Houston Invitational at Husky Field on Friday. The Huskies dropped a 3-2 pitcher's duel to University of Pittsburgh in their first game, then fell to the University of Michigan 6-1 in the nightcap.

The Huskies (0-6) are scheduled for two more games on Saturday against Penn State University and Lafayette College. The day's slate has been adjusted with projected weather in the Houston area on Saturday, with Penn State and Lafayette now kicking the day off at 10 am, and the Huskies playing PSU at 12:30 pm and Lafayette at 3 pm.

GAME 1

Pittsburgh put together a three-run first inning and made it hold up to claim the victory. RBI singles by Mackenzie Reese and Gracie Helton were followed by an RBI groundout by Macy Hamilton to put a crooked number on the board before the Huskies had come to the plate.

In the bottom of the second HCU got on the board. Ella Herrewig walked with one out, and Jocelyn Briseno then pushed her to second with a two-out free pass. Madison Dominguez then poked a single to shallow left to bring up Chloe Foster, whose single through the left side of the infield brought home a pair of runs to make it a one-score game.

That would be the way it ended, as neither team could scratch across anything more. Cara Pitman (0-3) settled in after the rough first, scattering nine hits on the afternoon with just one walk and a strikeout.

Chloe Foster went 3-4 for her first career three-hit game, while Madison Dominguez added two hits.

Tieley Vaughn and Gracie Helton each had two hits for the Panthers (4-4). Amelia Long (1-1) earned her first victory of the season with six solid innings, giving up just five hits, walking three and fanning three. Kyra Pittman earned her first save, shutting the door on the Huskies in the seventh with the tying run on third base.

GAME 2

Game two started with the visitors scoring in the first inning for the second time on the day as this time it was Michigan scoring first. A groundout by Avery Fantucci scored Lauren Putz to push the Wolverines up 1-0.

UM would put three on the board in the third and two more in the fourth to break things open, courtesy of two-run doubles from Maddie Erickson then Lauren Putz.

The Huskies scraped home a run in the sixth to avoid being blanked. Leah Hammack was hit by a pitch with one out and Chloe Foster followed with a walk. With two outs, Tayden Alexander singled to shallow right to score Hammack.

HCU managed just two hits in the game, from Alexander and Herrewig. Christin Haygood (0-2) was saddled with the defeat, going 2.1 innings and giving up three runs before giving way to Addy Prasifka, who went the remaining 4.2 allowing four hits and two earned runs with four punchouts.

Michigan (6-1) got just six hits in the game, with Putz going 2-3 with two RBI. Erickson had the two RBI and Jenissa Conway scored twice to back Kat Myers (2-0) who went five hitless innings with six K's to earn the win.
