SB: Huskies split Valentine's Day pair with rally past Leopards in weekend finale

HCU picks up first win behind five runs in final two at-bats and complete game from Pitman

HOUSTON --- Houston Christian University picked up its first win of the season in the second game on Saturday afternoon, using five runs in its final two at-bats to knock off Lafayette College 6-3. The Huskies fell to Penn State University 4-1 in the day's opener of the Houston Invitational at Husky Field.

HCU is now 1-7 overall and returns to action with a Tuesday night matchup in in the Alamo City against UTSA. First pitch is slated for 6 pm.

GAME 1

Penn State put up a two-spot in the first inning and never looked back. Allison Oneacre singled and Kirsten Finarelli doubled to put runners at second and third with one out, and Macy Chamberlain then doubled to right center to plate both.

PSU would tack on single tallies in the fifth and sixth. Finarelli had an RBI single in the fifth and Brooke Klosowicz hit her third homer of the season in the sixth to make it 6-0.

The Huskies avoided being blanked in the bottom of the seventh, as Karlie Barba smashed her first dinger of the season, a solo shot to left field with two outs.

HCU had just four hits, with Maddy Bailey going 2-3 and Barba going 1-3 with the homer. Leah Hammack (0-1) went the distance, giving up 12 hits and four runs while striking out three.

Bridget Nemeth (2-1) went the distance for Penn State (7-2), striking out two while allowing four hits and a run. Oneacre, Finarelli, Chamberlain and Klosowicz each had two hits.

GAME 2

Lafayette got on the board first in the second inning, taking advantage of an HCU error to take a 1-0 lead. The Huskies would match the run in the bottom half as Ella Herrewig singled and advanced to second on an error, then came around to score on a Chloe Phe RBI single up the middle with one out.

The Leopard jumped back on top in the fourth on an RBI single by Sabina Lehnert, but HCU would break ahead in the bottom of the fifth with two runs of its own. Tayden Alexander walked and stole second base, and Karlie Barba singled her home with two outs to tie the game. The Huskies then induced three straight free passes, the final by Phe with the bases loaded to grab a 3-2 advantage.

LC tied things in the sixth, again making use of an HCU miscue in the field, as Regan Dillon raced all the way around from first on a throwing error to make the score 3-3.

HCU then put up another crooked number to take control in the bottom of the sixth. Jocelyn Briseno singled up the middle to start the inning and moved all the way to third after a groundout. Heidi Maytum then walked and pinch-runner Madison Dominguez stole second. Chloe Foster then provided the biggest knock of the weekend, a two-run triple to right field that gave HCU a 5-3 lead. After Karlie Barba walked, Ella Herrewig lofted a sacrifice fly to right to score Foster with an insurance run and take the Huskies to a 6-3 lead.

Cara Pitman then closed the door with a one-two-three top of the seventh to earn her first win of the season. The sophomore right-hander allowed just three hits on the afternoon and one unearned run while walking two and fanning three.

HCU had seven hits total from seven different players, with Foster and Phe each driving in two runs.

Dillon Regan walked twice and scored twice while Sabina Lehnert went 1-3 with the Leopards (0-4) only RBI. Sophia Alvarez-Backus was saddled with the defeat, giving up three runs on two hits and four walks in just two-thirds of an inning.
