SB: Huskies drop season opener to Cougars

HCU plays twice more on Friday starting with first-ever meeting with Fairfield



HOUSTON --- Houston Christian University opened its season across town with an 8-1 loss to University of Houston Thursday evening at Cougar Softball Stadium. The Huskies cranked out 10 hits but could push just a lone run across the dish, falling in the first of four games to be played in the Houston Tournament over three days.
 
HCU put two runners on in the top of the second on singles by Jade Moreno and Heidi Maytum but didn't get anything out of it. The Cougars came back in the bottom half with a single run. Maddie Hartley doubled to start the inning but was cut down at the plate by Chloe Foster on Ronnie Esparza's single. Esparza came home on an RBI double by Kylei Griffin for the early 1-0 lead.
 

Three more came home for the hosts in the third, two on a long homer by Makenna Mitchell. In the top of the fourth, the Huskies again put two runners on on back-to-back singles by Ella Herrewig and Maytum with nothing to show for it after a lineout double-play.
 
Single runs were put on the board by the Cougars in the fourth and fifth via solo homers from Madox Mitchael and Hartley to give the home team a 6-0 advantage. HCU finally got on the board in the sixth as once again Herrewig and Maytum had consecutive base hits, followed by a single to right field by Foster for the Huskies first score of the campaign.
 

UH put got that run back and another in the bottom half on a throwing error and sacrifice fly for the final tallies of the evening.
 
Heidi Maytum led the 10-hit offense for the Huskies with her first career three-hit game. Ella Herrewig went 2-3 with a run scored and Raenna Liscano went 2-3 as well in her collegiate debut.
 
Cara Pitman was saddled with the loss, going 3.1 innings and allowing five hits on eight runs. Addy Prasifka went 2.1 allowing two hits and three runs and Leah Hammack closed the evening with a third of a frame.
 
Maddie Hartley led Houston (1-0) with a three-hit game of her own, cracking two doubles and a homer. Makenna Mitchell was 2-3 with a homer, two RBI and two runs scored. London Park go the win, scattering 10 hits and the one run in six innings of work.
 
HCU falls to 0-1 on the season. The Huskies will return to Cougar Softball Stadium on Friday for a pair of games; a first-ever meeting with Fairfield University at 11 am followed by a 2 pm rematch with Houston.
