SB: Huskies drop Thursday night opener of Bearkat Invitational

HCU plays twice more on Friday vs. Prairie View A&M and again against host Sam Houston

HUNTSVILLE --- Houston Christian University dropped the opener of the Bearkat Invitational on Thursday night, falling to host Sam Houston State University 7-3 at Bearkat Softball Complex. SHSU jumped out to 6-0 lead after three innings and never looked back in claiming the first game of its weekend tournament.

The Bearkats put two on the board in each of the first three innings. Jordan Peno had an RBI double and Bella Perez added a sacrifice fly to make it 2-0 after one. In the second frame it was Perez again, doubling home two runs to double the score. In the third, Morgan Holiday cranked a two-run homer to left to make it a 6-0 game.

HCU got on the board in the top of the sixth with a two-spot of its own. Raenna Liscano walked to lead off, moved to second on a single by Heidi Maytum and then came around to the dish on an RBI single by Chloe Foster down the right field line. Maytum, who moved to third on the play, would come to the plate on a double-play, making the count 6-2 Bearkats.

Sam Houston got one of those back in the bottom of the inning on an RBI single from Karrlauhn Deas. HCU matched that run in its final at-bat. The Huskies loaded the bases as Leah Hammack and Ella Herrewig led off with singles before Madison Dominguez was hit by a pitch. Jocelyn Briseno reached on a fielder's choice to bring home Hammack, but that was all the damage the Huskies would manage.

Leah Hammack went 2-3 with a run scored while Chloe Foster and Jocelyn Briseno each went 1-3 with an RBI for the Huskies. Hammack also went 3.1 innings of solid relief, giving up just three hits and one run. Cara Pitman took the loss for HCU after going just 2.1 innings.

Bella Perez was 2-3 with three RBI while Sophia Lundstrom and Tricia Yarotsky also had two hits apiece for the Bearkats (8-4). Amy Abke improved to 3-0 on the season by going five innings and allowing two runs on four hits with three strikeouts.

HCU is now 1-9 overall and returns to action on Friday with a pair of games. The Huskies take on Prairie View A&M at 1:30 pm followed by a second matchup with the host Bearkats at 6:30 pm.
