HOUSTON – After playing four of the first five games of the season on the road, HCU football hosts the Nicholls Colonels this Saturday evening for a Family Weekend Southland Conference matchup at Husky Stadium set to kick off at 6:00 p.m.

HCU (2-3, 1-1 SLC) and Nicholls (2-3, 1-1 SLC) have taken a similar route to this point in the season as they stand tied in the conference standings with identical records. Both teams earned season-opening wins during week 0 and then picked up win number two during week 2 of the season.

The Huskies played their second FBS opponent of the season last Saturday, falling on the road at North Texas in a 63-14 final. Cutter Stewart threw for 123 yards on 9-of-15 passing with a touchdown throw to Jett Runion while fellow quarterback Maddox Kopp scrambled for a 26-yard touchdown run in the loss.

As a team, HCU continues to be among the most disciplined teams in the conference. The Huskies are tied for the lowest number of penalties committed per game, averaging five per outing while their 48.6 penalty yards per game is the lowest total in the league.

The Colonels have a win over UT Rio Grande Valley under their belt but most recently dropped a 49-18 SLC home game to 15th-ranked Lamar this past Saturday. The Cardinals took a 42-7 lead in the second quarter and cruised the rest of the way. Quarterback Ean Rodrigue was 18-of-31 passing in the loss for 191 yards and a pair of touchdowns.

Rodrigue is averaging 152 yards passing per game and has tossed nine touchdowns with four interceptions. His top target has been fifth-year receiver Jordan Smith who has 19 catches for 244 yards and three scores. Defensively, linebacker Kennon Loftin leads the way with 39 tackles while Kasai Jones has a team-best two sacks.

The last time the Huskies and Colonels met at Husky Stadium in 2024, Stewart led HCU back from a 14-0 halftime deficit to a 24-21 victory. Stewart threw for 237 yards with a pair of touchdown passes and a touchdown run while fifth-year defensive end Rufus Toe finished the game with 1.5 tackles for loss, including a sack.

The Huskies' bye week comes next weekend before they host East Texas A&M on Saturday, Oct. 17, at 6:00 p.m.
