DENTON, Texas – Saturday evening will mark the fourth road game among HCU's first five games of the season with the Huskies set to face FBS-member North Texas in the team's final non-conference game of the 2026 season at 6:30 p.m. at DATCU Stadium.
The Huskies (2-2) have traded off wins and losses so far, most recently suffering a 30-23 overtime loss on the road to Southland Conference foe UIW. HCU trailed, 20-10, at the half before taking a 23-20 lead with less than six minutes remaining the game. A trio of HCU receivers,
Jamaal Hall II,
Trayjen Llanas-Wilcox and
Ja'Ryan Wallace, all had more than 70 yards receiving in the loss with Llanas-Wilcox and Wallace both scoring touchdowns. Kicker
Lukasz Smolen was perfect on the night, booting three field goals from more than 40 yards out.
Smolen is now 7-of-7 on field goal attempts for the season and is one of just 13 qualifying FCS kickers still without a missed field goal. Smolen's 38 total points this season leads the Southland and ranks sixth in the nation.
The HCU defense continues to cause havoc with 12 fumbles forced in just four games. The Huskies have recovered six of those fumbles, ranking third nationally in fumble recoveries. Overall, HCU owns a turnover margin of +1.25 which places the team among the top-10 in the FCS.
Offensively, the Huskies continue to connect on big passing plays with 36 percent of the team's completions going for at least 15 yards. HCU ranks fourth in the FCS with an average of 16.91 yards per completion. Running back
Champ Dozier has been a threat all over the field so far, ranking second in the SLC and 38
th nationally with 105.75 all-purpose yards per game.
North Texas (1-2) is coming off a road loss to Texas State, falling 49-35 last Saturday. Quarterback Tayven Jackson threw for 492 yards in the loss, completing 42-of-56 passing attempts with three touchdowns and one interception. Senior Justin Stevenson led the receivers with 122 yards on 10 receptions. Defensively, safeties Brandon Jones and CJ Coombes combined for 21 tackles to lead the Mean Green.
For the season, Jackson is completing 71.8 percent (79-of-110) of his passes for 917 yards with five touchdowns and two interceptions. Running back Jaheim White is averaging 5.6 yards per carry and has three touchdowns while also catching 16 passes for 126 yards and two scores. On the defensive side, Coombes leads UNT with 26 tackles and defensive lineman David Onuoha has a team-best 1.5 sacks.
HCU and UNT have met once previously with the Mean Green defeating the Huskies, 57-31, on Sept. 5, 2020.
The remainder of the Southland Conference slate lays ahead of the Huskies following Saturday's game with a visit from the Nicholls Colonels up first on Saturday, Oct. 3.
