HOUSTON – The women's basketball team closed out its two-game week with a 65–52 home victory over East Texas A&M on Saturday afternoon at Sharp Gym, outscoring the Lions 41–26 over the final three quarters to move to 5–11 (3–6 SLC).
East Texas A&M opened the afternoon on a 13–3 run behind early drives from Ahmya Boyce and Tiani Ellison, who scored 10 of the Lions' first 13 points. HCU responded with late points, including a three from
Kamryn McLaurin in the final minute to trim the deficit to 15–10 after the first quarter.
HCU settled in defensively during the second quarter, holding the Lions to 5-of-16 shooting and just 11 points.
Hannah Fields came in and scored right away to give HCU some momentum, while
Grace Booth added a three and a layup on consecutive possessions to bring the Huskies within one. Both teams points baskets late, and HCU entered halftime down just 26–24 after shooting 29% in the half but winning the rebounding battle 22–20.
After the break, HCU took control with a 19-point third quarter, highlighted by threes from
Tove Caesar,
Jordan Jackson, and McLaurin. Caesar's second three of the game pulled the Huskies within three, and Jackson's wing three at the 4:32 mark gave HCU its first lead, 34–32. Fields added a midrange jumper, and McLaurin connected from deep again to extend the lead to seven. The Huskies held ETX to 6-of-17 shooting in the frame and carried a 43–40 edge into the fourth.
HCU dominated the final quarter,
Sidney Carr opened the period with a three-point play, and
Dasia Hyams added a layup to push the lead to 48–44. From there, HCU controlled the quarter on both ends, and
Hannah Fields continued her standout performance, including a layup at the 1:33 mark that pushed the lead to double digits. Seconds later, she converted a free throw to reach 11 points, tying her career-high.
Madison Hurta added a late three, and
Grace Booth sealed the win with a transition layup.
Kamryn McLaurin led HCU with 18 points and three steals while shooting 6–10 from the floor. Fields finished a perfect 5–5 for her 11 points and added five rebounds. Booth posted nine points, nine rebounds, three assists, and two blocks, while Caesar recorded nine points and eight assists. The Huskies' bench produced 46 points in total.
