BEAUMONT, Texas – HCU took a 1-0 lead in the last minute of the first half before the host Lamar Cardinals fought back and scored a final minute game-winner on Thursday night at the LU Soccer Complex in Southland Conference women's soccer play.
In the first half, things started off slow with Lamar (4-4-3, 1-0-2 SLC) getting a few shot attempts off but none of them had much of a chance. The Huskies (5-5-1, 0-1-1 SLC) got their first attempt on goal when a
Madison Stormberg attempt was deflected off a defender toward the bottom right corner where Eloise Bywater was able to make the save. HCU's
Emmy McKeon made a stop just over a minute later to keep things scoreless. The Huskies earned a corner kick in the 45
th minute with
Alexia Murillo sending the ball into the box where
Madi Lambert had a shot blocked right back to her and she sent the ball to the bottom right corner to stake HCU to a 1-0 halftime advantage.
The Cardinals knotted the score at 1-1 in the 67
th minute when Lauren Smith snuck a ball into the bottom left corner. Things remained even as the second half went along until the final minute when Lamar scored the game-winner on a header by Sydney Williams from a corner kick.
Lamar put nine of 12 shot attempts on goal while the Huskies finished with eight shots and two on target. HCU earned eight corners in the loss.
McKeon ended the night with seven saves in goal for the Huskies. Lambert's goal was her first of the season.
HCU next hosts Northwestern State at Sorrels Field on Sunday, Sept. 28, at 1:00 p.m. as SLC play rolls on.
