Huskies drop straight sets to Georgia State in tournament finale

HUNTSVILLE, Texas — Houston Christian volleyball wrapped up its weekend at the Sam Houston Tournament on Saturday afternoon, falling 3-0 to Georgia State by set scores of 25-23, 25-20, 25-19.

The Huskies (5-8) came out strong in the opening frame, surging to a 5-0 start behind early kills from Cassidy Drapela and Joya Euhus. HCU held the lead midway through the set and pushed ahead 21-17 after back-to-back attack errors by the Panthers, but Georgia State (8-5) responded with a late run to claim the opener, 25-23.

Set two featured another back-and-forth battle, with HCU building a 19-14 edge after a service ace from Anna Melgren and a block by Allana Archie. The Panthers answered once again, closing on an 11-1 run to take the frame, 25-20. Georgia State carried the momentum into the third, using timely kills from Maria Cecilia de Pinho and steady back row defense to seal the match, 25-19.

Hannah Redrow paced the Huskies with seven kills on .294 hitting, while Drapela and Archie added six apiece. Archie also led the front line with four blocks, while Euhus tallied three. Peyton Fadal distributed 15 assists, and Madison Hess chipped in 13. On the defensive end, Bianca Byerly anchored the back row with 20 digs, followed by Melgren with 11.

For Georgia State, de Pinho led all players with 11 kills, while Marta Lazzarin collected a match-high 20 digs.
