Houston Christian University returns to Sorrels Field on Sunday evening to close out its three-match homestand when it hosts Gonzaga University. Kick-off is scheduled for 7 pm.
After winning their season opener last Sunday over University of the Pacific, the Huskies dropped a hard-fought physical contest against UMass Lowell on Thursday evening. The River Hawks' Oliver Holmstrom cleaned up some clutter just on top of the goal line to secure the game's only score in the 22nd minute.
UML's Alvara Medrano made that stand up between the pipes with nine saves. He and the Lowell defense fought off a 22-shot attack that seemed to be just in the way of every shot taken by the Huskies.
Joby Reid had five shots, three on target to lead the offensive effort.
Ron Pressler had four shots and
Ricardo Garcia and
D'Alessandro Herrera each had three.
Alex Aitken made three saves on the evening for HCU, now 1-1-0 on the season.
HCU will now face a Gonzaga team in a return match from last year's first-ever meeting between the two schools. The Bulldogs were victorious 2-1 in Spokane, Washington as they took a 2-0 hold on things before an 80th minute score by
Sebastian Rodriguez cut the lead in half. GU would then fend off several late chances in the final 10 minutes to secure the result.
The Zags are 1-1-1 thus far in 2025, having earned first-year head coach Chris McGaughey his initial career victory on Thursday night at Incarnate Word. Gonzaga got an 81st minute strike from Alex Bazia to claim the 1-0 decision over the Cardinals.
Bazia, a sophomore midfielder from Bellevue, Washington, has scored both of the Zags goals on the season through three matches. Also returning from last year's club for Gonzaga are third-leading scorer Drew Pederson, who had four goals and three assists as well as goalkeeper Chema Preciado, who posted a 6-10-2 ledger in his rookie campaign.
Following the matchup with Gonzaga, HCU will be away for the first time on the 2025 slate. The Huskies travel to California to take on UC-San Diego on Thursday evening for their first-ever clash with the Tritons.
HCU returns to Fondren Road on September 7 to take on long-time rival Oral Roberts University.
